Pretty Good

... View MoreIn truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.
... View MoreThis is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama
... View MoreThis movie is awful. It feels like every cliché about lesbians was smashed into this movie so it could be the most lesbian of all the lesbian movies. They didn't even do that well. Familial drama was added (poorly) to give the movie "depth." Drama between the couple was introduced, but worked out feebly. None of it works. It feels like they wrote this movie as they shot it. Story lines don't add up and you end up more confused with each scene. The acting, writing, and camera work are all mediocre, but somehow that didn't even add up to a mediocre film.Unless you sole intention is to make fun of a movie, I do NOT suggest wasting any time on this.
... View MoreI understand the term "Mockumentory" and what that encompasses, but i couldn't figure out if this movie was trying to be funny, serious, or whatever. The acting was bad, the writing was worse, and the premise was mediocre at best. I'm not sure what movie the person who rated this 10 stars saw, but i doubt it was The Baby Formula. The jokes were lame and uncomfortable, the scenes that were supposed to be "serious" were laughable, and you just don't really care about the characters... at all.I sort of understand what the director was trying to accomplish, but it was a huge miss. Perhaps if this movie had better actors, and was done in a more serious tone with a few very subtle comedic bits, it would have been more successful, but instead the film was all over the place and it leaves the viewer not really knowing how they're supposed to feel. "Are they trying to be serious now, or was that a joke?" Is basically how you'll go through this movie.I only wrote this "review" after seeing the ridiculous 10 star review given by someone who must surely work for the film in some manner, which is just sad.
... View More"The Baby Formula" is a low-budget independent 'comedy'. Two women want to have a baby together, so they find this scientific lab that will make a 'female sperm' from stem cells. I thought that was a pretty cool premise that could make for a pretty good film, but I was greatly disappointed. It is shot in documentary style, but it's just too fantastical that the documentary angle does not work. Instead of even trying to come up with a sci-fi explanation they had the scientists make little 'jokes'. These so called jokes aren't even funny. On top of claiming that this is laugh-out-loud funny, the marketing department also claims that this film is moving. The so-called 'moving' parts must be when the two women get angry with each other for various things as they go through this journey. I'm calling them women because even though they have names, they aren't characters - I don't know them, all I know about them is that they are having a baby. There is nothing to connect me to these women so I don't care about them at all.I normally want to recommend independent films, but I can't do that this time. "The Baby Formula" is not worth being seen.Check out "TiMER" (2009) instead - it's an independent romantic comedy with a sci-fi/fantasy angle and it's great.
... View MoreAthena & Lilith are determined to have babies...together...or should I say...each other's. Director Alison Reid has crafted some outrageously humorous scenes from the film's concept AND she has managed to bring some genuinely heartfelt and heartbreaking moments to the screen with this hugely successful first feature film from what promises to be a director to watch.Reid has also quite cleverly decided to play a bit of hide-and-seek with the audience, seeding just enough doubt about what's actually taking place, to keep the audience interested and engaged. It's a keen wink to the making of documentaries in a time when it seems everyone is waiting to grab hold of their 15 minutes of fame, and it's becoming increasingly difficult to separate reality TV from it's scripted counterpart. The Baby Formula is a sly, intelligent comedy that will keep you laughing till the bitter end. I'm in love with this genre again!
