If you're watching this as a biography, you're in the wrong theater! The Babe is just a great story based on a great baseball player. It has some inaccuracies, that's true, but Goodman pulls off a performance equal to or better than the best of character actors!Goodman was born to play the Babe and while it's a bit over the top, he captures the cadence and presence of that time in America...This movie was made in 92. It was a totally different America; we still went to the theaters in droves. The internet was still a decade from exploding...Nobody had cell phones...This movie was panned in that era because there was lots of competition and the schmaltzy Hollywood fare was put on the back burner for movies like Stroker's Dracula, Reservoir Dogs, Last of the Mohicans, A few Good Men, etc...In that class, Babe is sitting the bench! This recently watched movie made me appreciate the life work of J. Goodman and his larger than life screen presence... Sit back and choose your poison...A very entertaining movie!

I gave up long ago looking for accuracy in sports biopics (or any biopics for that matter), so I approached this film with the same expectation. John Goodman was a good choice to play the legendary Ruth in both mannerism and appearance, but as many reviewers have noted, he was obviously a lot heavier and decidedly unathletic in any scene that takes place on a ball field. I certainly wouldn't go to the bank on many of his off field exploits as depicted here either. For me, the repeated instances of flatulence that the film makers thought was a good idea simply appeal to the lowest common denominator factor they mistakenly think they have to cater to. As expected, the fabled Ruth exploits of hitting two home runs for the sick boy in the hospital and the 1932 'called shot' against the Chicago Cubs are depicted, but even those events that have become part of baseball legend are somewhat inconclusive in history. If you're a baseball fan, believe what you will. For a better straightforward accounting of the Sultan of Swat, I would direct you to the 1998 HBO documentary simply titled "Babe Ruth". Though it's much too short at one hour to encompass all aspects of Ruth's storied life, it does manage to adequately address the highlights of a career that would have to be invented if most of it wasn't actually true. As far as "The Babe" goes, it's entertaining in it's own way, but for the most part, it's banana oil.

This movie is just a shame. There are a lot of people who think Ruth is the greatest player of all time and were just waiting for a decent biographical movie to come out about the Babe. This was just a let down. Tons of factual errors, bad choice of actor, you name it.Ruth was definitely heavy but listed at 6'2" and 220lbs. Some say maybe 250lbs later, but Goodman is much heavier and not very athletic looking. Ruth stole home 10 times in his career, he ran well for a big man. Maybe more like a Prince Fielder type of guy. He did so many awesome feats, why lie and embellish them? This movie rarely made mention to his pitching prowess which got him his start in Boston. He did not hit many home runs early on. He did not hit any in his last game which was in Phila. five days after the 3 homer game in Pitts. Little Johnny did not return the ball he signed, in fact it was auctioned several years ago. He did not hit an infield home run. In 1927 Gehrig did not have 14 home runs before Ruth hit his first! In fact when Gehrig had 14 Ruth had 18! I could go on and on with errors. Why not just get it right? The guy was still a legend!

I found this movie to be appallingly bad. The actually story of Babe Ruth is fascinating, but the movie treats him as the same caricature that popular memory has created. Goodman's portrayal is shallow and treads on parody. He does manage to copy the voice of the Babe fairly well, but that only picks up about an hour into the film. Facts are disregarded throughout the story and confusing leaps through time distort his career. Not for baseball fans, not for history fans, not for movie fans. The only people who might enjoy this are Red Sox fans, as the whole two hours does a great injustice to the most famous Yankee of them all.
