The summary above may sound harsh, but after just recently re-checking this film out after many years of forgetting about it the first time around when it was initially released, I can not really be anything but honest.Kelly Preston is (of course) beautiful, stunning, in fact, but her acting skills are just not really up to par for this title, and I don't think they ever truly improved a great deal from this either. In saying that, this film has a few jump-scares (the "classic jump-scares, not these modern day fillers), which are rather effective, and I really love the dog and cat which are in the film, they're so cute!Another fine thing about this film is it's soundtrack, in particular the instrumental piece by Tom Scott - "Siren's Song" which plays on the stereo system in Jeff's apartment when he first brings Miranda home. This is true 80's jazz influenced brilliance in all it's glory, and I wish I had a copy of the tune itself, but it is incredibly hard to track down (and I don't think included anywhere but within this film's soundtrack). All in all, a 4 out of 10 is rather generous, but I do love the animals in this, and Kelly's beauty is a nice distraction from this otherwise cliché and very boring late 80's thriller.

In Los Angeles, the successful lawyer Jeff Mills (Timothy Daly) plays a basketball game after hour with his colleagues. When he comes to the parking area with his friend Derek Clayton (Rick Rossovich), they see a stranger hitting a young woman and Jeff and Derek protect her. Then she explains that her name is Miranda Reed (Kelly Preston) and she lives with the man named Aldys (Anthony Crivello). Jeff brings her home and they have one night stand; but she moves to Jeff's apartment and they start living together. When Aldys finds Jeff, Miranda vanishes and he seeks the police department to report the disappearance of Miranda. Lieutenant Lee (Cary- Hiroyuki Tagawa) sees the photo of Miranda and asks him about her necklace. Soon Jeff learns that it is the symbol of a satanic sect that worships the devil. Out of the blue, Miranda reappears and explains to Jeff that her mother is a witch that introduced her to her coven. She is trying to leave them and she needs to miss the next solstice, when they will gather at a beach to sacrifice a human being that will spontaneously participate of the meeting and take his heart. When Miranda is abducted by the worshipers, Jeff decides to seek her out. "Spellbinder" is a spooky, sexy and underrated horror movie with a flawless story in the style of "Rosemary's Baby". I saw this movie three or four times in the 90's and today I have just watched it again on VHS. The plot convinces mainly due to Kelly Preston, who is lovely gorgeous and sexy and capable to seduce the lonely Jeff Mills like she does in the story. The final twist is absolutely unexpected and surprises the viewer. My vote is nine.Title (Brazil): "Enfeitiçados" ("Bewitched")Note: On 03 September 2015, I saw this movie again.

** Possible Spoiler Alert **This movie will make you feel kinda uneasy, since it has to do with a satanic cult. Most horror movies like this are the best, because they contain a lot of creepy, scary goings on. You can show me a slasher flick and i won't be so disturbed, but the type of horror movie that gets me on edge is supernatural horror. Anything to do with ghosts, witches, goblins, demons, and Satan herself will be just what to watch at midnight with all the lights in the house off (and maybe a howling wind outside for added bonus). Check this movie out. It will leave you begging for more. It's even got Mrs. Roper from "Three's Company" in it, as a satanist. She was hiliarious in that show, and she's quite creepy and evil in this movie. The ending will really shock you, because it's a twist that you really didn't see coming. This movie is really underrated, but you'll enjoy it if you like your horror movies with inverted pentagrams, and hooded figures chanting around a campfire, ready to plunge a dagger into an innocent victim's chest and rip out their heart.

Just seeing a 25-year-old Kelly Preston makes this movie worth watching, and, boy, do we get to see her.Jeff (Tim Daly) apparently finds the girl of his dreams (Preston), and things are going great until her friends show up looking for her. She has a past that she hasn't explained.Soon, they are battling a coven of witches that want her back. It all builds up to the night of the Winter Solstice. The twist at the end caught me by surprise, and really made the movie. You have to give props to writer Tracy Tormé, who really stacked some surprises in this film.
