Very well executed
... View MoreIt's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
... View MoreIt’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.
... View MoreI think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.
... View MoreAnother reviewer was surprised that so many people rated the film as a one. It is clear to me that the reason is simple zero was not a choice. If this was supposed to be slapstick perhaps but I don't think so. It was hard to turn away much like watching the proverbial train wreck. Every character is bizarre. Though the character is not Hispanic, Vince Vaughn is perfectly dressed up like an formal mariachi every time he appears. Dwight wears a hat on stage for good reason but not in this movie. Dwight's partner wears a skirt because his mother saved his life by dressing him as a girl? Billy Bob Thorton delivers about 25 just strange lines that have nothing what soever to do with any part of the plot. The bad guys shoot up a glass front bank in the middle of the night with a machine gun and then after blowing up the inside finally attract the attention of the sheriff. The sheriff then staggers around the street shooting randomly hitting nothing as the bad guys ride out with all of the money. On and on etc not one likable or interesting character. But still hard to look away.
... View MoreSouth Of Heaven Looks Terrific. All of the production department did great work on this picture. The Director of Photography was James Glennon and he and his camera department crew shot a beautiful western movie in Arizona locations and western towns. His exteriors look like a big movie and his interiors are beautifully lit. Le Dawson was the costume designer, Production Designer was Siobhan Roome, Lee Ross worked as Art Director, Bart, Dennis Dion and their team did the Special Effects. The entire crew were all top talents. The Audio Recording crew did such good work on location sound recording that there was no need for re-recording dialogue. Enjoy how wonderful all the scenes just look like such a good looking big motion picture and all produced on a limited budget. Enjoy it. Top cast as well.
... View MoreI bought the DVD to watch due to the fact that it has a brilliant cast. There are not many films to watch with so many famous and talented actors in it. Well, this was my assumption before I sat through South of Heaven West of Hell. One of the issues was the screenplay. It felt like writers had difficulties to remember what they had written in the beginning of movie. There were quite a few things left without question marks in ending. Or I didn't get them like everyone I viewed the film with.(A couple of them had fallen asleep so no need to include those). The second issue was the casting. It is mostly expected to see so many successful actors in Robert Altman movies. In this film they were either there as guest actors or were showing their least as if this was just a movie they were making before their next important project. They were as slow as the film's scenario and dialogs. Of course there were a few pictures but that didn't add much up to films slowness and false dialogs. Well, I cant say this film is not worth watching. I think all films deserve viewing however bad they are. Just make sure you don't spend your pennies on this. Borrow it from someone who has it or watch it on TV. * out of *****
... View MoreI am very surprised at the negative comments about this film, which I found hugely entertaining and likable in a black way. Surely it is provocative and rambling but with cameos upon odd-ball cameos spotted in a leisurely paced gun-toting cruel western, I give full marks to Dwight Yoakam in pulling it off. He wouldn't have attracted those names if they didn't like the mostly dark, witty and surprising screenplay. Billy Bob Thornton has priceless lines and delivery. The director uses unlikely outcomes of various scenes but so do most directors (otherwise films would be a lot shorter with the evil, heartless and sadistic co-stars bringing the heroes to premature ends) and the romantic side is just as incredible as the guns and violence. It's the best western set film since Dead Man by Jarmusch (with Johnny Depp and a similarly impressive host of stars).
