“Somnium” is a story about how in order to alleviate problems, one tries to avoid them or not admit them to oneself. The main character of the film imagines an ideal world where the worries of so-called ordinary life do not exist. However, the resulting social isolation has prompted the character to imagine companions who don't really exist. A person trapped in an ideal world imagines himself as a fairy-tale character sleeping in a high pile of mattresses, but instead of being comfortable, his sleep is disturbed by the peas hidden between the mattresses. Is “Somnium” a dream or a sleep-like waking world?
