A lot of perfectly good film show their cards early, establish a unique premise and let the audience explore a topic at a leisurely pace, without much in terms of surprise. this film is not one of those films.

Although I seem to have had higher expectations than I thought, the movie is super entertaining.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

Movie stars have the dream life. Beautiful dates, big money, looking cool in trailers and movies, fancy cars, big homes, etc. Well, Sofia Coppola is the test to that statement. Coppola, so brilliantly, makes us think twice about how lucky Hollywood folks truly are, and shows us that actors are no different than ordinary people. Stephen Dorff (a smaller actor playing a gigantic star, ironically)portrays fictional movie star Johnny Marco. Johnny is a passionless, lonely, and wiped- out actor who has hit the big screen in a bunch of blockbusters. To Johnny's surprise , his young daughter Cleo (played beautifully by the young Elle Fanning) comes for a surprise visit in the Château Marmont hotel with her distant father. Together Johnny and Cleo share a beautiful bond that is both heartbreaking and gorgeous. Sofia Coppola starts out with a long shot of Johnny driving his Ferrari in circles to stimulate how his life is just one giant routine and doesn't have a destiny. The beautiful opening of "Somewhere" lets us know that this film isn't going to have much dialogue, but is rather subtle in examining the emotional damage of Johnny Marco. Stephen Dorff is a revelation. His acting comes from his brilliant facial expressions and his feelings that you can capture by looking into his eyes for just one scene. The slow pace that Coppola drives "Somewhere" with helps the audience blend into the feelings and boring lifestyle of her protagonist, while the true conflict lies with Johnny searching for happiness and reconnecting with his daughter. The relationship between these two gems is a force to be celebrated. Their scenes together are so authentic that you'll end up crying out of beauty. The true meaning of the film relates to the desire to go somewhere in life. Not by being a giant star, but by finding meaning in life with the people around you and by following your true passions. Coppola's directing with little dialogue lets us dig deep into the existential tone she sets for her characters. The scenes with few dialogue are breathtakingly beautiful. "Somewhere" is a character study that tests the essence of the true meaning of life. This film will help anyone with struggles, and is a revelation to the art of cinema.

This is it Sophia Coppola has lost it she tries too hard to get into art genre its not everyones game its a gift she is no roman Polanski so why bother but i have to say her lost in translation 2003 was much better then this any day.Why Sophia Coppola never gives chance to Nicolas Cage in her movies is beyond me they are cousins & family plus Cage is a top class legend actor instead Sophia just writes lame scripts only for gaining praise from critics its been so many years she directs same type of films the characters in her films are shown as extremely tragic ones trying to gain sympathy every time. The Plot:a confused Hollywood actor goes to a hotel just to get drunk, get laid with women but suddenly his daughter arrives there too and things go more awkward.Where is the story just what were these guys thinking the hotel was bad,the strippers appear doing weird dance Johnnny Marco actually lets a male massage man enter the room just when he is undressing john gets up & says this is not for me i mean wow i bet the audience just clapped at this scene at least he realized he quick he was in trouble. The big question is why is he keeping his daughter in same kinky hotel filled with filthy environment john simply does not care because he himself is a person with no morals, manners or shame left. The pace is slow affecting viewers attention one cool thing this project has is the black Ferrari which john drives & wastes not only fuel but his time & also of the audience members who paid big money for this film having some expectations or hoping they might get entertain but nothing interesting happens from start to finish.I will tell two films that are amazing then this movie first one is Leaving Las Vegas 1995 & second is Flashbacks Of A Fool 2008 starting Daniel Craig i have seen both of them those are classics compared to this junk. The Cast:Stephen Dorff is a good actor but he must not be happy after he saw this attached to his filmography the rest cast fails to impress but what the hell was Benicio Del Toro doing here along with other famous celebrities including Michelle Monaghan.Overall Somewhere 2010 is the most empty film from Sophia Coppola i hope she would not make this mistake again my rating is 2/10.Skipp It

Well, the title isn't exactly true. You see, I did try. I got around halfway through before "giving up", but I still left the film running on the background while I went surfing the net, and glanced it every so often till the end. It's not like I have the shortest attention span, and couldn't stand watching a slow movie. Not at all, but the slowness still has to have a purpose, and the film must lead to somewhere - Somewhere didn't.I also couldn't find any underlying message or meaning to the film whatsoever. It's shot OK, and has some nice scenery, but nothing of particular interest, and nothing that would set it apart from other modern films (except perhaps no CGI, if that should be a merit). In essence, Somewhere is an exercise in boredom. Just because the main character is bored and without purpose, doesn't mean the audience should feel that way too. For someone with a wildly hectic lifestyle, something like this might be a welcome break, but my life is boring enough as it is.Somewhere did not entertain. 2.5/10
