Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.

Skiptrace is the most bizarre production I have seen in a long time: an action comedy produced by China, co- starred by the legendary Jackie Chan and the ex-Jackass Johnny Knoxville, and directed by the Finnish Renny Harlin, who seemed firmly established in independent cinema after having been involved in some Hollywood blockbusters. I can't even imagine the meetings between the producers of this project: "We got the director of Deep Blue Sea!" "Um..." "He has worked with Sylvester Stallone and Freddy Krueger!" "Um..." "And we also have the star of Jackass! North American teenagers are going to be fascinated!" And more phrases like that, I guess. The final result is an insipid and tedious film, despite Chan's charisma. And what about Knoxville? The question is irrelevant; the producers only needed a North American face in order to correctly imitate other North American imitations of Asian action films (Is it clear?) in which Chan worked, such as The Tuxedo and Rush Hour. Chinese super-star Bingbing Fan plays the retrograde damsel in distress role, something which is even more frustrating because she's a solid actress, and she has also displayed quite a physical ability in other films; but in Skiptrace, she's just a pretty face to flirt with Knoxville and become a hostage who must be saved. So, Skiptrace is basically a tourist pamphlet with bad jokes and null suspense. Some years ago, Chinese Zodiac was much better as a Chan movie, and well... I'm not even going to compare Skiptrace to the most famous films in which he worked, such as The Legend of Drunken Master, Armour of God or (my favorite one) Police Story 3: Supercop.

Hong Kong police detective Bennie Chan (Jackie Chan) loses his partner Yung in a deadly bombing. He suspects that businessman Victor Wong is criminal Matador responsible for the death. He's been investigating for 9 years to no avail. World-traveling thief Connor Watts (Johnny Knoxville) is on the run from the Russian mob after sleeping with the daughter of the boss. In Macau, he gets involved with Yung's daughter Samantha who is infiltrating a casino connected to Victor Wong. He steals her card to access a private floor where he witnesses Esther Yee's murder. He escapes by getting taken by the Russians. The casino accuses him of stealing money and Samantha asks Bennie to track him down. This is classic Jackie Chan. The action is still there and so is his sense of humor. His fights still have that pep and his fights with Eve Torres are actually funny. It's nothing new except this time's guilo is Knoxville. I expected better chemistry but the two deliver enough comedy. The story doesn't really work and the movie tries very hard to make it into a muddle. The guys end up in the Mongolian desert for no particularly good reason other than it's exotic cool. It's great to see Jackie staying in fighting shape but it's not much better than that.

This film tells the story of a Hong Kong policeman who has to catch an American con man, chasing him from Macau to Russia. Along the way, they encounter trouble with Russian gangs and Mongolian tribes. They have to do everything to survive."Skiptrace" is in English but it is clear that it is aimed at the Chinese market. The film itself is adequately entertaining, with a lot of action scenes done in a funny way that makes you chuckle. However, it just looks like every other recent Jackie Chan film, even the action sequences are beginning to feel strangely familiar. It is an adequate choice to kill an evening, but don't expect too much because Hollywood action films have moved on but this hasn't.

3/10. Jackie Chan and Johnny Knoxville team up to catch an elusive criminal. Let's start off by saying I really love Jackie Chan, although a lot of his movie are very cheesy they are still worth watching for the fight scenes and stunt work. However this film is very sad, to see him getting old and struggling to do any decent stunts. Some of the fight scenes were still fun but very lacking, I think he really needs to change to a different style of film now to suit his age, he is 62. Knoxville was fine in the supporting role, but nothing special. Renny Hardin as director could have done a much better job here, with films to his name like Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, I would have expected more. Don't bother seeing this film, it just made me sad to see Jackie too old for this kind of movie now, and will make you sad too if you are a Jackie fan.
