The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

Well, yes, Actors from the USA are deplorably bad kissers in gay movies (we do forgive Jack and Heath, but REALLY! What are you afraid of????) I've seen dozens of gay films made with "straight" actors on every continent but NA, and THEY are not afraid of real open mouthed, tongue involved, passionate kissing playing gay men, but actors of the USA are deplorably bad at expressing passion and deflate the film no-end.That aside, this is one of the truly GREAT GAY LOVE STORIES on film. This now from the perspective of a battle well fought and won. I've seen ad nauseum so many films of gay lust, desire, obsession - well, all fine until we got our rights. Now they seem rather trite and immature. The great gay love films, about true love and affection and devotion, are rare and this is one of them.I'll add RED DIRT, LILIES, LILTING and THE NORMAL HEART to that short list of great gay love films.Brad Rowe is just the most down to earth, decent, loving, patient man in love and Trevor Wright gives an Oscar-nom worthy performance as the confused artist, coming to grips with practically everything in his life all at once.Kudos to the director, to both actors and gratitude to you all. I have shown this film to friends and family and it has literally changed their thoughts and beliefs, so bravo to the film-makers, you have WON!

Shelter is a great film. I'm sad that I just heard about it, wish I knew about it before! It's about love, all kind of love and it's not focused on sex so it's better then most of the LGBT themed movies. I've enjoyed watching it so bad that I'll probably re-watch it again. Like FRIENDS marathon. It shows an independent young man's (Zach's) life, his adventure and talent. What he has done to help his family, how hard he tried to keep everything OK and finally something good (I'd say awesome tho) happens to him. I'll say it's one of the movies you should at least consider watching. And you know for most people LGBT means just having fun and having sex. This movie totally proves it wrong.

This Movie is the only one that I have viewed that has gay main characters that contains no signs of them being effeminate, no mention of the "LGBT" community being "supportive", no sign of loss of masculine emotions, and above all that no hint that they had anal sex...at all... It is stated that they "had sex" or were "fucking", but there were none of the traditionally "LGBT" based signs of it. It is actually quite possible that the type of sexual encounter that they regularly engaged in was non-penetrative. This film, if it were watched by members of the "LGBT" community, would be interpreted a different way, they would say it was the traditional "coming out" story, but that couldn't be further from the truth. This movie is about love between to people who have BOTH just discovered what love was. Shaun is supposedly comfortable with his sexuality, but is initially unwilling to admit he is in love with his brother's best friend because, as the movie shows it was probably the first time he was genuinely in love. Labeling this film as "LGBT-Themed" does not give it justice because it relates directly to the homosexuals and bisexuals who purposefully avoid the "LGBT" community. It is by far my favorite movie because it's story directly relates to anyone who has truly and completely fallen in love.

This movie was incredible! I loved every second of it. The way the characters were portrayed was very unique to the gay genre. Getting to watch as Zach became a whole new person was interesting. The way he reacted and the way he cared for everyone around him was different. I'm happy to finally watch a gay movie without all the comedy, stereotypes or vulgarity. It was a very wholesome movie that ANYONE would enjoy. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE vulgar comedies like Eating Out but I wanted something different for a change and that's exactly what I found. I thought it was nice to see Shaun portrayed as a very masculine character. Instead of making him flamboyant or even slightly stereotypical they made it to the point where I thought he was straight. Honestly, I didn't know he was gay until Jeanne mentioned it. I loved that Cody grew so fond of Shaun, it was adorable.
