Great Film overall

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Overall a dull love story but Steve Carrell's always-excellent acting, Keira Knightley's charm and a believably fraught finale carried it up a level to a very respectable romance flick score.

I thought this was going to be poor especially with that title but it was better than expected, (there are some quite cruel reviews out there for this movie) no special effects here it's mainly about two people coming to terms with the fact they face a cataclysmic end in a few weeks and they look back at the relationships/marriage that they have had and how it could have panned out differently if they had taken a different course. Its now free on Amazon Prime and being stuck at home after an operation this helped while away one afternoon. NOTE!! this could be a SPOILER this is a quote from the Goofs "The announcer on the TV at the end says that the asteroid Matilda is arriving one week earlier to Earth than expected. If this were the case, then due to the trajectory of an asteroid and the velocity at which the planet moves in orbit, the two would no longer collide with that great of a mistake in timing unless either there was a mass conspiracy to lie about the timing of the asteroid or for some reason the planet stopped moving in orbit for some undetermined reason." So this could have been the opportunity to have SAFFTEOTW2 but as it didn't do so well there is only the one movie.

The plot gives room for thinking and pondering, how would it look like, the end of the world...but I don't need this movie to imagine it. The main characters are miscast to say the least, and the film fails to be funny, and it fails at being romantic. It even fails at being dark. Dodge is the daft loser, and Penny is the goofy screw up. Dodge hates small talk and/or conversations, but eventually they have long, boring conversations about how their lives were before. I kept longing for the red wine they had, and just tuned out. I guess I didn't even expect Dodge and Penny to hook up. It's fine with an unusual couple, but come on! They had no chemistry, and I thought it was both unlikely and a bit gross.

Going into this movie I wasn't expecting much, thought it would be some raunchy comedy but wow was I wrong.It started out seeming like it would be just a basic comedy after meeting all the actors and actresses that usually are in comedy movies. But as soon as Keira Knightley becomes the focus, it really ventures out to a more meaningful yet still funny type movie that I really did enjoy a lot. Steve Carell did a great job, he really did convince me on his character and was cast perfectly for this role, but Keira Knightley WOW I'm in love (honestly what is not to love about Keira Knightley). All of her scenes were fantastic, here funny scenes actually had me laughing out loud at some points, and her more dramatic scenes really brought some tears to my eyes. I loved this movie, its funny and meaningful at the same time and I would rate it a 10 out of 10 any day. Should've gotten a higher rating than it did, at the very least in the 7's.
