Thanks for the memories!
... View MoreSERIOUSLY. This is what the crap Hollywood still puts out?
... View MoreA terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.
... View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
... View MoreThis is not a film for everyone. It is done more for the art and has weird dreaminess about it, though the story holds up well. This is not a typical Bollywood love story (guy and girl irritate each other, then fall in love and then there is some remake of DDLJ in there). Love is the warm feeling this movie gives you even though the entire movie is cast in blue colors. Ranbir Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, and Sonam Kapoor are outstanding. I cannot think of anyone better suited for their parts. It's hard to really judge Salman Khan's role since it is a short part without much dialog. All other supporting characters are perfect. I loved Zohra Segal as "Lilipop". She made me want her as my own adopted grandmother! I read the user reviews and was set for a great Bollywood movie, but came away with mixed feelings. On one hand, I'm not into art films, and I wanted to not love this when I started watching it, but there is some sort of trance this movie keeps you in and while you want to hate it, you just can't seem to get there and you stay for more. The feel, the music, the set and the characters all work as a drug to keep you on board. My choice of 5 out of 10 is more because I don't get into art films, but yet I liked this one. Like I said, mixed feelings about it. If you love art films, it will probably be closer to a 10. If you love the typical Bollywood romances, it will be less for you.
... View MoreThe fact that Saawariya was not taken well by the Indian masses simply shows that Sanjay Leela Bhansali is light years ahead of what the demands and understanding of quality cinema is in Bollywood. SLB should be making European dramas, not catering to an audience who has no capability of appreciating and respecting art.Saawariya is a triumph in every aspect of film making. It is the most breathtaking cinematography and art direction put on an Indian screen, the most visually striking of all movies, laden with electrifying performances from the cast, heart breaking dialogs and a soulful musical score. The perfect Anti-Romance of our generation.Simply fantastic and a must watch.
... View MoreI am not a fan of musical or of romantic movie genre. I fast forward through musical numbers, can't stand them. I only got the DVD for this movie from the library because it was directed by SLB. No matter what, his movies are without any doubt worthy of a look. He is one of the better Bollywood directors at the present time. I have watched all of his past movies. The most recent one prior to this one was Black, which I did not like. I felt the same way for the first 15-20 mins of this movie. But I could not turn it off simply due the visually appealing sets and gripping direction from SLB. Sonam Kapoor's performance is worthy of an award given that this is her first movie. Ranbir is also good. Rani is her dependable self. Music, I thought, was below par given the nature of this movie. One or two memorable tracks but not a blockbuster soundtrack. The movie is highly underrated going by its IMDb rating. Even tough it is not a genre that I generally enjoy, it is still much much better than most Bollywood movies that have come out recently...
... View MoreAn expensive and indulgent experiment, Saawariya doesn't quite work because the writing is flawed and the director doesn't seem to notice. Once a master manipulator of human emotions, Bhansali now fails to invest in his characters even the smallest dose of believability. Like cardboard caricatures, lifeless and dull, they rattle off ridiculous dialogues trying to sound like they have something profound to say. How you cringe in that scene where Ranbir convinces Zohra Sehgal to lease him a room, or that one in which he likens being sad to losing a boxing match.Saawariya comes off contrived and fake, and fails to strike a chord. You feel nothing for its characters, at best sympathy for the two young actors trapped in this pathetic, pretentious pap.Starring newcomers Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor as Raj and Sakina, the protagonists in question, director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya is a glossed-up, all song-and-dance take on Dostoevsky's classic tale White Nights, and also borrows judiciously from Luchino Visconti's 1957 film version. But where Visconti's black-and-white film stays faithful to the story's intimate set-up and stark feel, Bhansali goes for a larger-than-life, almost kingsize scale, throwing in dazzling colours, opulent sets, imaginatively choreographed musical numbers, a half-dozen references to Raj Kapoor's films, and the kind of melodrama you can expect only in a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film - remember Devdas?Well, the problem with varnishing a simple love story with all those embellishments is that the very simplicity of the plot, the fragility of the characters' emotions is lost amidst all that showing-off. What you get as a result, is a love story without soul.
