It’s sentimental, ridiculously long and only occasionally funny

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

One of the best TV series I have watched for sometime. From the writing to the acting and everything in between, it was just perfect. Original and highly entertaining I wholeheartedly recommend the show. Even now I still go back and watch the last 5 minutes again.

It is the type of show that people with lots of time and an easy life can enjoy. It is slow, weak and implores psychological perils of different human beings. The reason I say it is for a certain type of people; it is as far away as reality as you can have. Life is fast paced and keeps us all occupied. We do not want a TV show that takes us into a pointless fantasy land that doesn't make any sense. The acting is quite good, character building is good too. Dialogues are almost non-existent barring one character and his script is again, good for a literature student but repulsive and un-relatable to a normal human being. And the worst part: the show is very slow - to a point that it becomes pointless.

"River" is a police/ crime drama that stands out from so many others. It's very human. It tells a story that most people can relate to in one way or another. The development of the two main characters, "River," and his partner, "Stevie," is enjoyable to watch. The more we get to know who Stevie was, the more we know who River is. Much of what I liked about this series is sensory; beyond just the story line; rainy London streets and city lights, the soundtrack...and as we are seeing things from the point of view (mostly) of River, we see Stevie through his eyes, too. She is beloved. This is one of those rare series where once you've finished the last episode, you'll want to go right back to the first one again. And that's saying something; because there's only one season. Heartbreaking, warm, suspenseful. Just beautiful. Although Stellan Skarsgard very adeptly and tenderly plays the role of "River," I have to admit now I want to go back and watch everything Nicola Walker (who plays "Stevie") ever did.

This series took me three episodes before it sunk in. The first two episodes teetered between M. Night Shyamalan ridiculousness and Terrence Malick pompous creepiness. Episode three cuts back on the silly voice overs and laughable conversations with dead people, giving this series some serious mojo. Combine that with some top notch writing, stellar acting from Skarsgård and crisp direction and you have an intriguing and engrossing show. But best of all, Manville's strong but vulnerable boss illuminates the series with some revelatory chops that make everything seem more real and more involving with every show. By the conclusion, I was hooked and wanting more. Television shows don't get much more substantive than this.
