what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

Does this organization even exist? It sounds like everything I wouldn't want my children or myself to learn. In any case, thank you Family Learning Channel for rejecting Mr. Don Hertzfeldt and shaping his way into the wonderful world of animation. This is a collection of very short films, most, or probably all, of them extremely violent and non-sensical packed not only with humans, but also the most oddly-shaped creatures, for example strange cloud figures. Hertzfeldt was in his early 20s when he made this short film and his style of animation is already clearly defined. He was well on his way to turning into the master of dark animation back then already.Nonetheless, I have to say I don't like this short film as much as some of Hertzfeldt's other work to this day. At best, it can be described as pointless fun. I am a bit surprised that his only Oscar nomination so far was for "Rejected". My two preferred choices by him are the earlier "Lily and Jim" and "Wisdom Teeth" which was made 10 years after "Rejected". Nonetheless I'm glad he made his first full feature film recently, even if it's only slightly over an hour, and it seemed to have turned out well. His style always struck me as something difficult for anything over 30 minutes. Keep up the good work, Don.

Don Hertzfeldt has created a cult classic with his 9 minute short animated film, Rejected. Rejected has no plot, it has no characters, all it has is a bunch of drawings rejected by fictional The Family Learning Channel and a fictional company, both who allegedly have hired him to do advertisements for their companies. The first 6 minutes of the film shows us some of Don's work with the absurdity and craziness present in each short commercial. The last three minutes are the amazingly done climax which is really quite a work of art but I won't ruin that part. The reason that the film is so funny to almost anyone who watches it is because of the randomness the cartoon's act in. Saying and doing non-sensible things to each other while they are suppose to be advertising for the fictional Family Learning Channel. Another amazing feat of this film is that it is not animation. It is done by Hertzfeldt entirely who drew hundreds of sketches of the cartoons and flipped them in front of the camera to make them move. I'm not sure of the processes name but that's what he did. It is I don't see a problem with watching this short film. You won't get anything but a laugh out of it but everyone needs a laugh once and awhile and Hertzfeldt will deliver that laugh.4.5/5 Stars

Hertzfeldt made this film with the intention of engaging in some sort of social criticism. Unfortunately, all he's created bizarre mediocrity. It is not enough for art to merely obtusely react to the status quo. On the most fundamental level, art must provide truth and insight. Otherwise, it is relegated to haplessly flailing around in an inane pursuit of shock and controversy. When art depicts truth, it shakes the very foundations of the contemporary social order without a second thought. In the end, revulsion to a contradictory world is only the first step in an honest political and artistic portrayal of it. As Trotsky wrote in 1923, "You can't scream louder than war and revolution."

Metaphorically at least. This is one funny movie, it is a wonder that my insides are still in the right place after laughing at this so hard. I'd like to extol its many virtues, but every time I try to start analyzing it, I end up in a giggling heap. Suffice it to say that this is without any question the best and funniest short animation I have ever seen.To my shame I have to admit to only having seen a pirated version of this great flick, but hopefully one day I'll have the opportunity to see it in its full glory. Since the animation is quite inventive towards the end, it would probably be quite interesting to see the film on a big screen, but alas, no such opportunity has arisen.
