R.E.M. : Perfect Square Trailers

Perfect Square is a video recording of a concert by rock band R.E.M., filmed on 19 July 2003 at the Bowling Green in Wiesbaden, Germany. It was released in DVD format on the Warner Brothers label on March 9, 2004. This concert is perhaps most notable for a performance of the song "Country Feedback", which Michael Stipe opens by declaring it his "favorite song". The rendition features appended lyrics from another song, Reveal's "Chorus and the Ring", and a guitar solo by Peter Buck, neither of which are in the original. Other concert highlights include the appearance of two then-new songs, "Bad Day" (Also originally known as PSA when first written in the early 1980's) and "Animal", and the re-emergence of the long-lost song "Permanent Vacation". "Permanent Vacation" dates back to 1980, years before their first album, while "Bad Day" dates back to 1985.

It's a movie as timely as it is provocative and amazingly, for much of its running time, it is weirdly funny.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

I must say that R.E.M. is one of my favorite rock bands of all time and the finest one America gave us throughout the last twenty-five years. Their numerous credentials (Velvet Underground, Byrds, punk etc...) helped them to create a diversified music whose influence on contemporary rock is incalculable. From the enigmatic "Murmur" (1983) (my favorite album of them!) with its jangly guitars and mumbling vocals to their latest effort, the committed and overlooked "Around the Sun" (2004) to their magnum opus "Automatic for the People" (1992), the band has become mature and explored new musical territories sometimes with so-so results but usually with gripping amounts. Even Bill Berry's departure in 1997 didn't hamper their creative potential and they have a welcome down-to-earth behavior about their condition of superstar. They also have an active role in American politics and I wonder if what Michael Stipe says just before "Bad Day", here is an allusion to the Iraq war.Die-hard fans (I am one of them) must have been overwhelmed with this live of 23 songs recorded on the 19th July 2003 in Germany. It is a terrific digest of a nearly flawless career which spreads over more than two decades. It comprises hits and favorites like "Losing my Religion", "the One I Love" or "Everybody Hurts" but also lesser known tracks from early albums such as "Maps and Legends" from "Fables of the Reconstruction" (1985), "Begin the Begin" from "Lifes Rich Pageant" (1986) and even a curio: "Permanent Vacation" written in 1980 and performed only twice from Michael Stipe's words! This is a fly-on-the-wall film and the director adapts her camera work according to the mood a song could convey. The band keeps the balance between pure rock songs and ballads and maintains a great proximity with the audience (a few songs of the concert were chosen by the members of the fan club. Michael Stipe is a buoyant entertainer, Peter Buck is a brilliant guitarist with jumps à la Pete Townshend while Mike Mills is a discreet but efficient bass player and occasional keyboardist. He works wonders with the keyboard on "At My Most Beautiful". The drummer is as competent as Bill Berry.Nearly two-hour rapture, this is an unqualified must for any R.E.M. aficionado and it should also appeal to casual listeners. The concert also reminded me when I saw Michael Stipe and his men in concert in Paris on the 08th February 2005. Very nostalgic memories...

Absolutely the best live video ever- the band just seem to really come together and put on an outstanding performance. I have always liked REM, but this video really highlighted their musical ability, along with their excellent stage persona. The video came as a free-view from DirectTV, and I ended up taping it. When I found out that a DVD was available, I bought it, and with shipping paid a price of twenty seven dollars. Believe me, it was worth every penny - money well spent indeed. The DVD contains more tracks than the original airing on TV.If you like REM, you will definitely LOVE this DVD !

It's finally there-maybe the best concert documentary of its kind (and i've seen a lot!)Leaving the half-baked, sometimes very crude attempts to produce a time-after-time enjoyable music movie of legendary R.E.M. behind, this one finally made it into music lover's heaven.Besides the fact that it's a very personal benefit to me, cause I've actually been there that beautiful summer day in Wiesbaden in 2003, this concert has been recorded at the highest technical and professional standards. Grab a good stereo and TV and it's like actually being (back) there.Furtermore (maybe cause they knew it was being taped) the band, not the youngest of guys anymore, unleashed all their live experience and musical abilities to create an entertainment-inferno. The DVD shows the whole concert, which has been recorded with quite a lot of cameras from well-chosen angles. Those who only know the band by their greatest hits will find this concert movie as enjoyable as those who are able to sing along every syllable with JMS. They actually played rather unknown songs plus two brand new ones along with fresh variations of their smash hits-23 all together.Highly recommended- not only by me as a die-hard fan but also as someone knowing to value a dedicated production.9/10 (I think 10/10 is not really something I'll ever experience...)
