It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...

Until George Takei's Facebook post supporting Prelude, I was unaware of fan-funded Trek films. Truth in advertising, I contributed to both the Kickstarter campaign for Prelude and for the full Axanar movie which will be filmed in 2015. However, if I thought I hadn't gotten my money's worth, I'd say so. That is NOT the case here. This is a great concept that presents a prequel to The Original Series. And despite the shoestring budget for Prelude, the production quality is astounding! It's also cleverly presented as a History Channel-like documentary that reviews the events of the Four Years' War between the Federation and the Klingons.Production quality aside, this is a brilliant collection of on-screen talent with veterans of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Babylon 5, and even the original Battlestar Gallactica. I'm sure I'm missing other projects but you get the idea. This is NOT a bunch of rookies. What makes me an expert at all this? Years of fandom as a viewer, with the elevated expectations that come with that. Bottom line is that this leaves me hungry for the full movie, just as it was intended to do!

Even Prelude to Axanar is fan based, could founded Independent short story it looks amazing. This is the way Star Trek movies should be. Even I like also J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies they are far away from the original feeling and idea of Star Trek. On the other hand Prelude to Axanar manage to bring original Star Trek universe back where it belongs, to fans. I only hope that Paramount could come closer to real fans of Star Trek fans and make this project to original Star Trek movie. They could finance this project as fan based movie and let it stay Independent project. Great story combined with great actors and beautiful CGI with the feeling of original Star Trek universe is something fans should get. I hope this project will get it finance and we some day will see a true Star Trek movie again on big screen.

I funded the Kick-starter, for full disclosure, and was skeptical, but optimistic about the movie. After watching the now completed Prelude, I was instantly hooked, and can't wait for the full-length feature. It's a great story, that's never been told in the history of Star Trek, and the production staff is fantastic, effects aren't perfect, but still fantastic for an indie-film. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it in 1080p glory on you-tube, and support a great take on the Star Trek universe, and canonical story-line. One of the best parts of the short film, in my opinion is the Documentary-like take on it, as if the viewer is setting in the 24th or whatever future century watching the Federation version of the History channel, and seeing what went down from the Captains that were there at the time of the 4 years war. Brilliant decision, and definitely adds to the characters, as they tell their side of the story.

Prelude to Axanar- Shows what can be done when you get professionals in front and behind the camera donating their time and skill to something they care about. The clever documentary style is one example of how thought went into this. Old fans respond to the care shown to past episodes-yet its documentary style can make some one new to Star trek join in.Star Trek with its history of 5 TV series and 11+ Feature Films has had ups and downs. Recently with the 2 new films -Star Trek has reached larger audiences But in my opinion these films were more a blockbuster money making effort. That's fine for some, for myself I would prefer more care with story and exploring the trek universe. With Prelude to Axanar, that's what you get -you can tell those making it are fans of Star Trek that's very important. The fans new and old respond to that. Its the fact they are invested in making a professional production (for no profit)that is exploring the rich history of Star Trek that resonates. The other great thing is its all history to explain the origins of one character in the Original Series. Just think how many other great stories are waiting to be revealed. And this is just a prelude! The Full feature awaits and look at the kick starter to see how people are eager for that.
