The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

From the other comments I just read, I found out that this was about trance music and the rave scene. Or is that rave music and the trance scene. Being 52 and American, I didn't know about any of this. I did catch that it was about drugs and young people's susceptibility to drugs and the tragedies that can cause, but even that was obtuse and inaccessible to someone like me.Someone mentioned Pieces of A Dream, and I did think of that one as I watched this. I did not care for that experience as I felt that an artistic and misanthropic director threw all nasty imagery he could think of at his audience and regarded his audience as mere guinea pigs on which to vent his venom. But, at least I understood what was going on. The director, like many reviewers, clearly subscribe to the new mantra of film-making that mandates that the best directors maximize obtuse imagery and minimize words. A lot of guesswork was required.I guess I'm old-fashioned but I still find plot essential and wish to follow one when I see a movie. I needed a prerequisite course in trance and the rave scene in order to understand this one.A friend asked me if I liked Australian movies, and I've loved many of them, about 20 of the 23 I've seen. He lent me this one. Make that, 20 out of 24.

One Perfect Day is about a small group of young people whose lives all meet within the art of sounds and visions. As an old disco-holic that stopped looking for driving dance beats after the dullards killed disco in the late 70s I fell out of the music scene and traded my cars woofers, midranges, and tweeters for a minivan and bringing up kids. I caught up just recently with trance and dance music and fell in love all over again. Swing, big band, disco, dance, trance. Other music is nice, but… Back to the movie. Lives are made and lost as drugs and bad decisions from immature people mix in a deadly cocktail that devastates the characters on the dance club scene. In the end, what's left of the good guys win and bring some wonderful sensory sugar to everyone. The casting was excellent as was the sound track, plot, dialog, and cinematography. This goes to show you that excellent movies and excellent actors aren't necessarily made in Hollywood USA. Bravo!!

I saw this when I lived in Melnourne from 2002-3.We say it on opening might in Melbourne and while it is not "The Castle" or "The Dish", it's still not a bad movie, especially if you like the music and the whole rave music vibe. What it also does is prove the high quality of Aussie film-making for such a relatively small population. In fact, if they had made it a 1 hour movie with a bit of plot and all the music scenes, that would have been good enough for me to still pay to see it on the big screen. I bought the sound track and unfortunately they took some liberties on what was in the movie and what is in the soundtrack. That's really too bad as lots of the movie scenes are not on the soundtrack but in the movie and some of them are very good. I was hoping for a better sound track compared to the movie, but hey, it might be a good rental if you're into the music...

Some moments in "One Perfect Day" are total crap, while other moments are nothing short of mini-masterpieces. Let's start with the crap. The title has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie. It doesn't take place in one day, it takes place over many days, and most of the days are pretty horrible. Then there are the cheap story-telling devises. They practically spoon-feed you the plot when the director of a famous opera company talks about the need to find a new musician who can make opera more relevant to the public today, and while he's taking, we're shown images of the young and rebellious Tommy, who hears music in everything from trains to homeless people. Cheesy! But after Tommy's sister dies of a drug overdose and he discovers the world of Australia's club and trance music scene, "One Fine Day" starts to get interesting. Yes, it's full of predictable good guys and bad drug deals, but the music is transcendental! When Tommy is spinning at an all-night beach rave and his dead girlfriend is singing while he's playing violin, the music is nothing short of ecstasy for the ear. I honestly can't decide if I love it or hate it.
