To establish the legitimacy of my criticism: I've been watching both English and Hindi movies since I was five and my father rented episodes of the Maharabharata and then I saw Rocky the next day.Yash Chopra must have gone out and gotten every swimsuit model in Canada for this movie. It's built entirely as a vehicle for his son, but surprisingly about half of the movie is extremely watchable and even well shot, performed and scripted. The movie opens with Neal (Uday Chopra) as a young man from a rich family in Canada, who's about to get married. He decides to go to Vancouver to enjoy his last few days of freedom and decides to meet as many girls as he can before the wedding.Enter Tanisha as Nikki. She opens the film as an exaggerated Indian version of the morally bankrupt Westernized female, drinking alcohol, being sexually forwards etc. The movie is rather up-front about pre-marital sex, and even throws in a few kisses between the leads (those villagers must be going crazy in India over this). They go through some unusual love story troubles in which both sides are revealed to be dishonest about their true intentions, realize by the end that the other is indeed awesome enough to marry. The acting is not Oscar worthy. Chopra comes off as too metrosexual on film (disturbing amounts of lip gloss/lipstick), and seems too short even by film standards. Tanisha's not bad, but is outshined by a swimsuit model. I found myself actually shouting at the TV "Give the model a bigger role," and it seemed Yash heard me and we were given Amanda (Serinda Swan). I guarantee a million Indians were on the Internet searching for her pictures after seeing this movie. Music's decent. Chopra could have spent a week more on the script as some dialogue is clunky and some obvious punch lines missed.Overall: A fun, yet uneven movie aimed squarely at NRIs and will most likely be doomed to comparisions with the far better Dil Chathai Hai.On a side note: the character Happy is by far the most ridiculous yet sublime musician I've ever seen in cinema. He truly shows us all how to rock while holding a mandolin, and ends up not only with groupies but a bangingly hot fiancé.

For the Love of Good Cinema

This movie is very modern and forward. It is about 75% in English. It is aimed at English-speaking multiplex-going young audience. Basic plot is similar to DDLJ. Acting is below average.Unfortunately they are portraying a wrong picture and setting a bad example for the youngsters. Tanisha is shown drinking from a bottle, or taking shots of tequila about 5-6 times in the movie. The director does not even acknowledge she is an alcoholic and has a drinking problem. All through the movie she only wears bikini tops whether she is at work, at a beach or at a wedding. The heroine of the movie doing this makes the youngsters feel this behaviour is acceptable. The less that is said about failure of Uday Chopra doing Shahrukh Khan's DDLJ role of arrogant girl-chaser, the better. The movie is about equality of sexes. But equality should not be about making the same mistakes, instead about doing the right to do the right thing. If men have been shown as chronic Casanovas in movies, does not mean women should also portray same behaviour.Even though the movie is made in light-hearted fun spirit, it promotes so many wrong social notions in the name of being forward, that "fun" part of the movie makes no impact. Not even in Canada women dress like this, or guys behave like they have shown in the movie. It is certainly not a reflection of Indian society or even Canadian society. Perhaps they should have a disclaimer at the beginning stating, "All characters and events in the movie are imaginary and do not reflect the actual culture of the cities and countries mentioned in the film." The only good thing about this movie is the length, 1.5 hrs, thank god.

Neal N Nikki was shot in Vancouver B.C. ( that is not why i'm partial to the film) but it does shows Vancouvers Radiating beauty. The film itself needs to be broken down in order to be appreciated.First of all this film is NOT for the old generation of Bollywood film goers. To translate this into a Hollywood comparisons it would be American Pie meets a love story.Secondly the acting is terrible, but the roles are so unique that i couldn't think of other actors to pull it off. Tanisha and Uday create believable annoying roles, but they slowly by the end of the film find a place in your heart where you can understand where they are in their life. I thought Tanisha was annoying at first, but by the end i realized that i for the first time knew a character not an actress. The reason is I know this is not how Tanisha acts on her day to day routines, she filled the role of a perky 20 year old well.Third, the songs are brilliant. Yeah i agree that the film presented them a bit weakly;however, the songs are amazing. A great fusion of west meets east in i'm in love, Neal n Nikki is the most kiddiest song but is hummed almost immediately after the film is over, ahk ladiya is a fantastic Punjabi song, and halla re has great music. I thoroughly enjoyed the way they parodied old Indian movies in "im in love" thus proving that this movie is for a new generation. So if you can over the taboo dialouge, and cheesy but cute plot line, Neal n Nikki is naughty and nice!!! I loved it, cause of it's character..it was definitely not run of the mill..and thats why i liked it.

It is definitely not worth spending either money or time. It is the same hackneyed plot of a guy and a girl meeting and falling in love. But this is with a western touch. But it fails miserably in either depicting a love story or giving it the western touch. Never do we feel that the hero and heroin are in love. There is no depth to either of their characters. Probably, with a better cast, some justice could have been brought about to the characters. Finally, it is a movie with no fun, no acting, no theme, no plot, no comedy , no action, no thrill, no romance (i associate romance to something more passionate). Definitely not a movie you would want to go with your family. Overall, if you are looking for a movie with some content, this is definitely not an option. I shall wait for the day when bollywood movies are something that i can wait to watch and i can refer to my friends as a "must watch" movie.
