Good films always raise compelling questions, whether the format is fiction or documentary fact.

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

All of the confusion and sadness of childhood trauma and abuse perfectly portrayed. All of the tears and fake half smiles and twisted memories. All of the frustrations. All of the guilt. Everything. And nothing. 'Mysterious Skin' is...it's a really really really strong film. Powerful to the near max. It shook me to my core and I am now practically wordless. To say the least it is not at all a pleasant film, nor is it a perfect film (some of the lesser editing choices did take me out of it every now and then), but it is an important and impactful film that beautifully and disturbingly tells an important and impactful story about so much and so little at the same time. It does not hold back. It says what needs to be said. And that's that.

I'll make this short. The film is not that bad, it has a strong subject and handles it quite well. It opens interestingly, and then it's all the way dawn. The problem is that the movie is predictable, but in a way i've never seen before(and i've seen a lot).In the very first 10 - 20 min you can tell how it will end. I almost stopped watching it because i felt disappointed. Instead, i saw the whole movie, only to confirm my suspicions. And that's not because i'm sherlock, but because it's movie itself that shows you what should be a "mystery",at the very beginning, taking away any possibility of suspense or surprise. I think that was a huge mistake(but it seem to be just my opinion, since it has a decent rating)Anyway,i think that you deserve to know that you can know the whole story,in the first quarter of it.My rating is to balance, because it's overrated.

In 1981, Brian Lackey suffered from blackouts and bloody noses. His family is crumbling. He and his mother saw a UFO. Neil McCormick had sexual feelings for the baseball coach. His neglectful single mom (Elisabeth Shue) would leave him alone and the coach would spend time alone with him. In 1983, Neil and Wendy take another boy during Halloween and end up abusing him. Brian is taken by a man and has another blackout episode. In 1987, Neil (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is 15 and selling himself. Wendy (Michelle Trachtenberg) has a unrequited crush on the homosexual Neil. In 1991, Brian (Brady Corbet) sees Avalyn Friesen (Mary Lynn Rajskub) on a TV show about real alien experiences. She helps him investigate his blackouts. Neil leaves and follows Wendy to NYC. Brian finds Neil's friend Eric and his mother. The child abuse is creepy as hell. I think it's a mistake to portray so much of it especially early on. First, it's a high hurdle to clear for most audience. Second, it takes away from the shock of the reveal at the end. Overall, this is a good disturbing movie. JGL is amazing in this movie. While much of this movie is about Brian, JGL keeps making Neil the lead.

Misleading descriptions leave out that this is essentially softcore homosexual pornography; first 24 minutes that I saw were nothing but graphic pedophilia and homosexual prostitution, nothing about a hustler, nothing about aliens other than they look like child rapists.Movie's description should be updated to include: A flaming homosexual does a bunch of gay stuff and some guy shows up every few minutes with a nose bleed.Extremely bad movie, extremely poor taste in terribly written description.Whoever wrote the script to this movie is obviously a pervert and should be euthanized immediately.
