A Brilliant Conflict

It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

This film may have been a decent thriller (mediocre at best with its conventional indie 70s period piece style) but it relies on one aspect of Dahmer's character to sell the film. This film's major theme is Dahmer's transformation into the psychopath we know due to his treatment by his friends as a class clown. This is untrue even within the film as he is already torturing animals at the beginning or at least dissecting them. It's either that or the film just wants you to look at how weird it is that a future serial killer is going to high school. "Did you know Jeffrey Dahmer went to prom?" It's empty and hollow and may have been something with better directing or a more complicated look at Dahmer who is shown here as your typical outcast. The drug dealer is portrayed as being more dangerous than Dahmer who reacts with a frightened expression to a gun going off despite wanting to kill several people in the film. The most interesting thing was them meeting the Vice President for like five seconds. If this film went into people who are obsessed with Dahmer after what he did and people who are into murderabilia that may have been something. But Alex Wolff in this film is not a character. There is nothing I can think of to say positively of the film. Visually it is as boring as it's story with competent lighting and competent shot composition but that just leads to a more boring product rather than something so bad it's good. I would rather watch Catwoman.

Ross Lynch, Anne Heche and Alex Wolff were phenomenal in this. Especially Ross Lynch. We had recently watched Status Update and there's no way you'd know that was the same actor in both movies. His acting was so convincing that even though his character's appearance didn't make him unrecognizable the way his character behaved did. I'd have to remind myself who I was watching. There's a scene where Jeff is called on in class to answer the question why history is important and Lynch does this thing with his eyes and face where you see him recognize the other students laughing at something he said and did and how it gave him some satisfaction. A feeling he wasn't unfamiliar with. It was remarkable. He should win an award for this movie. He has quite a career ahead of him that I believe will surpass that of Zac Efron.

His review nails it, wanted to emphasize its a six movie with the writing and Ross lynch putting it into a 7, a must watch for me. Youll be hard pressed to feel more like your in high school from any other film. It has real eloquence and applause for painting the characters fast. I really appreciated being Able to spend most of the runtime in the Dhamer high school awkward fest.
