Such a frustrating disappointment

... View MoreLet me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

... View MoreFilms like these are a complete source of relieving your mind. They will take you to an extraordinary journey which you feel near to your heart. This a film which can be seen by all Indian audience. I actually feel proud after seeing this. Indians are also capable of making films of a great standard. May be people who are too experts will say that the film does not employ any extraordinary things like anything technical. But I bet this is a film that even they would like to see when they are in stress or when they want to be relaxed. The chemistry between the two leads is worth watching. All the incidents that happened will keep you glued to the screen. The important thing is that you will not be heartbroken after the film."A must watch for everyone."
... View MoreI've noticed that many have criticized this beautiful film by stating that the themes of inter-religious feuds and riots were deliberately presented in order to attract the Western audience. I doubt this was Sen's primary intention and it's not as if such tragic events haven't happened in India. Indian history is stained with the blood of people who died in such feuds. That said, 'Mr. and Mrs. Iyer' isn't even mainly about the Hindus vs Muslims feud. It's about the encounter of two people of different backgrounds who coincidentally meet during their journey to a common destination and how this union develops into a nameless love. And, in a very subtle way, we see how Meenakshi transforms from a highly educated, ignorant and prejudiced lady to a highly educated, selfless and caring woman. All she does is open her heart. The tribal war is an important and symbolic part of the movie's backdrop but never does it overtake Raja and Meenakshi's story. What we are shown is suggestive and gruesome but suitably brief while remaining poignant. Aparna Sen has handled the sequences quite exceptionally. Not only is the film meticulous in the technical aspect of its execution (such as the stunning cinematography, first rate editing, highly effective lighting and sound effects and a bewildering score), Sen's direction is subtle and poetic. The score and the performances are brilliantly downplayed. The photogenic location is breathtaking and it only makes it more chilling and tragic that such ugliness can exist within the beauty and taint it with blood.Konkona Sen Sharma gives one of the most riveting performances of Indian cinema. This is truly one remarkable actress. One who doesn't speak a word of Tamil (other than a few lines in the film) but masters the diction with such precision that no one would guess that this woman is anything other than a Tamilian. Sharma plays her part very naturally and with sheer ease. Rahul Bose does a fine job too and the supporting cast do very well.I can describe 'Mr. and Mrs. Iyer' as a beautiful symphony, an epic ballad and a sensational story.
... View MorePowerful amazing movie, thought provoking. . . A sensitive story of two people. I was not ready for the power and weight of this story - I still get sad and tense - just thinking of the story. Konkona Sen-Sharma and Rahul Bose give such a wonderful performance. I can't relate to the life Raja and Meenakshi Iyer live, or the religious and caste issues, being from USA - the noon's and customs - I . . . well I was NOT ready for how powerful this story is. Amazing. The feel of the story as it unfolds is so special. There are none of the standard movie clichés to distract you. The pace of the story is flawless. For me the subtitles are clear and don't interfere with the scenes. A warning, for most Americans, would be the realistic and almost frighting violence. As I treasure this story, I of course hope you see it once at least. Oh, being a Bollywood movie - there is NO singing or dancing - if that tips the scale against Bollywood for you this is the movie for you.
... View MoreThe movie tells the story of a Muslim man and a Hindu woman on a bus, getting stranded amidst a Hindu-Muslim pogrom. She pretends that he's her Hindu husband to save his life. They are forced to spend some time together, and the initial fear, mistrust, and weariness changes into something both had not expected at all.Like many Indian movies, this one was made on a tiny budget, has simple story details and simple language, short sentences, very clear pronunciation, so it works even in the smallest Indian makeshift movie theater and on television. Hence only 8 out of 10 points. That said, the story is very timely, intense, moving, and absolutely believable. Both directing and acting are very good as well, making this a remarkable Indian movie.
