That was an excellent one.

... View MoreJoon-ho Bong's "Mother" is a calm and down to earth murder mystery as well as a surprising and dark drama. It offers clever writing, beautiful cinematography, and great acting. At that, it plays in the same league with other Korean hits like "Oldboy" or "Lady Vengeance", so it's no bold guess that it will be remade by Hollywood just like those. Which is a shame since the remakes steal attention from their originals. But that is another subject.Another thing that all these movies have in common is that, at their core, they are about family bonds. The same goes even for Bong's monster movie "The Host". So far, "Mother" is the most consequential movie in this regard. It think this is the reason why it is so easy to relate to it. It doesn't just show off the skills of the director, the camera man, the writers, the actors. It has a heart. A heart that is light at times but which can also be pretty dark.
... View MoreWhere to start with Mother? During my intense viewing experience I was astounded by Mother's multi-layered narrative where characterisation and plot twists have striking effects. In an unsettling story Madeo (Kim Hye-ja) and her son Do-joon (Won Bin) live in societies' bare margins. She is under pressure to keep her workplace in order while Do-joon clearly suffers mental health problems and easily mislead by his 'friend' Jin-tae (Jin Goo). These factors make the pair looked down upon by their neighbours. If social stigma wasn't enough Do-joon becomes the primary suspect in a local murder case. So begins the catalyst of Mother's multiple layers unfolding. There is no singular viewpoint Mother takes. Instead every character (of significance) has their pros and cons revealed to make one question their motivations. Are social perceptions coming into play? Is there an element of denial covering up the truth? Where does the guilt really lie? Mother is no holds barred experience where perspectives are challenged. As Madeo leads her own investigation into the murder case, more personality traits are revealed. If casting Kim Hye-ja was a conscious choice regarding her small stature, frailty and advanced age during filming then the casting director was correct. Naturally seeing an older woman fight against the odds provides a sense of weakness on her part but Hye-ja's conviction of vulnerability as Madeo is manipulated by Jin-tae into exchanging money to prove Do-joon's innocence lends sympathy towards her plight. Though Madeo's cryptic nature slowly became exposed only emphasising Mother's dynamic narrative.Mother is definitely a note-worthy film for those seeking serious drama and complicated characterisations that provided compelling insights and twists.
... View MoreI can definitely sure, she is a great mother. She takes the basic responsibility to be as a mother. Loving her child by not allowing any one bully him, caring about her son by caring him every little piece of life, and protecting her baby even though she needs to be a killer, all of them are what a great mother will do for her baby. Her love is everywhere in the movie, it is almost every of her performances in the movie is to describe the love, no matter by a simply words or by a small gesture. The mother here convinces me that she is the retarded boy's mother. It doesn't matter looking from the expression, the movement or the tone, she exactly the mother of the poor boy. Even she drops the conscience away to take the responsibility of a mother. Quarrelling with others to defend her son, doing something under table to help her son, and even killing a people to protect him, all of them can tell the audiences who she is, can shame those mothers without taking their responsibility, and also can make some idiots aware of what would a mother do for a son like them. However, from the great mother, there are also problems that, I think, the director want to show us. It is also the great mother who told his son to kick back when someone bully him, which leads to the killing he did. It is again the great mother exposes her selfish to the audiences when she decided to kill the junkman and put another poor boy into prison instead of her son. She even wants to believe anyone else can be the murder except her son. Those are also why I am confused about, maybe the movie want to tell us a great mother, not a great person and maybe the two ones can not be the same person.Anyway, there is no doubt that it is a great mother here is being talked about. The last thing makes me feel a little bit better is that our great mother cries when she talks with the innocent boy who catches the crime for her son, and that means she still has conscience.
... View MoreMemories of Murder, Oldboy & Madeo are the three Korean movies which will stay in your mind for a long time. This is the first time I'm writing a review for a movie at IMDb and this movie really deserves one. Madeo is about a mother who is trying desperately to bring her son out of imprisonment. I watched it late night, the screenplay is engrossing to such an extent that some scenes of the movie gave me goosebumps. Narration, Music and Cinematography make it an absorbing experience. The build up to the climax is really amazing. It's really hard to predict what happens next. There is something about the Korean movies which brings the characters involved in it closer to your heart. Be it the performances or the body language it stirs your heart. In the end when the mother dances on the tour bus after injecting herself with acupuncture, especially with music in the background leaves a lump in your throat.
