It's an amazing and heartbreaking story.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

Great movie. Not sure what people expected but I found it highly entertaining.

In an ancient time and place ("Minotaur" was filmed on location in Luxembourg, both interiors and exteriors), people that tended towards "hedonism and greed" needed a god that was somehow more tangible, one of flesh. So they contrived one by impregnating their Queen, who gives birth to this thing. Naturally, things get way out of control, and soon a regular requirement of sacrifices of the young comes about to keep the beast in check. One young man, Theo (Tom Hardy of "Layer Cake", "RocknRolla", "Bronson", and "Inception", etc.) is led to believe that a lost love of his, a past sacrifice to this thing, is still alive so he agrees to take on the challenge of determining if the Minotaur is really so much of a "god" and can actually be killed. Normally, when we watch stuff like this, we expect a lot of silliness and a lot of cheese and know not to take it terribly seriously. "Minotaur", however, which is inspired by Greek mythology, does go out of its way, for a while, to keep these elements at bay and deliver a somber, moody, foreboding kind of tale - and it works pretty well. Granted, before too long, the mostly inane characters cease to maintain any sort of interest and it becomes tedious watching these people get picked off. The actors who come off the best are Tony Todd (not surprisingly), who's magnetic as usual even if there's a definite feel of Candyman to his performance, and the absolutely luscious Michelle Van Der Water as the sister to Todd's character (one fun kinky touch is that Todd loves her more than as just a sibling, which doesn't exactly sit well with her), who's tired of the senseless deaths and tries to defy him. The actors playing the would be victims don't have enough to work with to register very strongly, but there is the attraction of seeing some veterans in the form of Rutger Hauer (whose disappearance from the story is rather disappointing) and the legendary, sultry Ingrid Pitt, who's actually unrecognizable, buried under heavy makeup, as the cave dwelling Leper. The creature gets a reveal sooner than this viewer would have liked, but it's reasonably impressive - big, bad, and ugly, and done with both digital and practical effects. There's some nastiness for gore hounds, although a lack of real detail (there's too much stuff taking place off screen, for one thing) will likely leave them less than satisfied. Not exactly that good, but not all that bad either; it may amuse the genre fan who doesn't demand too much from what they watch. Six out of 10.

This is a film that is loosely derived from the Greek myth of Theseus. Here the hero Theo also goes to join a contingent of youths taken to be sacrificed to the minotaur. He is also helped by a woman - the consort of the evil Bad Guy. Bad Guy incidentally is a cross between Morpheus from The Matrix (and thinking about that, Theo is a bit like Neo) and the evil person in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Lastly it is set in some bygone classical age as well.However it has a dark moody backdrop throughout, strange jarring cinematography, and alternating pseudo-philosophical dialogue and clichés. The characters are all trite and very annoying. It is amazing how dull the film is for the first 3/4. Even the labyrinth is not creepy, just a boring excursion looking for lost girlfriends, random vagabond dwellers, and exits. It does get slightly better once most people die though.

Minotaur - the word itself explains most of the entire movie.As it happened, my girlfriend bought the DVD-release at a local rental-store (used DVD), and thought it would be a good one. Sure, it has a good looking cover-art, and a nice fancy title/logo, but the rest just lacks content.The introduction and start of the movie makes it feel like at least a partly good one, though during its continuation, it clearly shines through as what it really is: A piece of utter wasted time and money.Do not buy or watch this movie, it's so bad you sit there thinking if you should have done the dishes or mopped the floor instead - as that would really give more excitement than this flop.To sum it up: if one could give a movie a dice-throw instead of the 1-10 rating, I would not even have thrown the dice.Oh, good thing about the DVD-buy on our side: We got a spare DVD-cover for something else - a bit expensive perhaps...

What's wrong with these people? These movie makers, they think they can be creative and change myth and classic cartoons to suit their "vision". Where there vision is blurry and need glasses. If you want to be creative, then write something new, you don't go around messing with classic Greek stories. The minotaur is part man and part bull. Which mean he walks on two feet and has hands. What happened to his eyes? There was a flashback when the minotaur was born and he had eyes. Just because something or someone goes blind from decades in total darkness doesn't mean his eyes fall out and where is his lips? Is this Minotaur alive or some kind of Zombull? The acting and story works, but the whole minotaur thing truly destroys the experience for me. One, fur on flesh, two walks up right and three has lips and eyes. The changes totally ruin this movie and I feel anyone who knows the slightest bit of Greek myth will feel the same, it's quite obvious the makers knew nothing of Greek Myth or of Minotaurs. So I give this awful piece of crap the NOOSE!
