When her rather explicit copy is rejected, magazine journalist Kate is asked by her editor to come up with an article on loving relationships instead, and to do so by the end of the day. This gets Kate thinking back over her own various experiences, and to wondering if she is in much of a position to write on the subject.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.

"I like being depressed. It makes me feel deep and introspective."Famke Janssen is a joy to behold in this insightful, underrated portrait of an alarmingly cynical woman. 'Love & Sex' takes a refreshingly frank look at the politics of sex between two individuals. Janssen, whom I had only beheld in all her beauty in a few "meh" action flicks, puts mountains of charm and introspection into this performance. She plays Kate Welles, a jaded women's magazine columnist who finds trouble with her foulmouthed boss for writing an article with step-by-step instructions on oral sex ("When life sucks, so should you!") This pretty much sets the tone for the film, which contains no nudity but some explicit sexual dialogue.I'm not presenting this as a negative whatsoever. It's almost inspiring, in fact, seeing a romantic comedy (no matter how IFC it is) that is so candid about such matters.Roger Ebert, the best critic out there, gave the film a negative review, feeling that "In successful screen romance, there needs to be the sense that the partners are happy simply to be there with one another, that there is a physical yearning, and not simply the need to talk fast enough to stay ahead of the one-liners." I would agree, partially. 'Love & Sex' is not perfect, far from it. At times it can seem like a series of one-liners, but would you rather have a train of quick and biting one-liners for dialogue, or a wretched dredge through moronic cheeseball sentimentality? I prefer the former.Overall, 'Love & Sex' is a shrewd and funny mix of Woody Allen and 'Sex and the City', and I would recommend it to open-minded moviegoers looking a quick and pleasing comedy with satisfying bite.3/4

I made another comment on this movie but I had to add this.... This movie has some of the best quotes in it.. and contains the Three quotes that I tend to use the most.. I wanted to share them"Adam: Two people could be perfect for each other and if the timing is wrong its never going to work out for them. Bad timing is the reason most normal people end up single... Kate: Normal people?? Adam: Yeah Weirdos and Creeps are single because they are weird and creepy, but people like us, we're single because we are victims of bad timing"Brilliant... Totally honest and so funny at the same time."Love is a minefield. You take a step, get blown to pieces, put yourself back together again and stupidly take another step.... I guess thats human nature. It hurts so much to be alone that we all would rather get blown up then be single."So very honest.. so very right on (for people who are completely honest with themselves)"Love is Ecstasy, freedom and imprisonment, longing and loneliness. Its what keeps us together when life tears us apart. So when you find that perfect man, hold on tight and then call me so I can run over there and see what he looks like and laugh because he doesn't exist you sad, perky little optimistic Suckers!!!!"I love it when Kate says that into her little Recorder... Perfect Timing.. This movie is just full of humor and honesty...

I warmed to this indie-Bridget Jones story of modern love. The message is delivered briskly and with wit and the stars don't overact. It makes no attempt to be or say anything profound - the narration of the story is a dictated article for a magazine on the periphery of superfluous. As a result the film actually gains in its interest and affect.John Favreau's bohemian foil for Famke Janssen's more mainstream female singleton is full of wit and genuine affection. It helps that his character is leftfield, re-freshing all the otherwise tired cliches of being in love in a supposed age of awareness. Janssen makes a good stab at frenetic/vulnerable but looking for love. She doesn't quite know how to really get the former however. It looks rather like she has made a cutely domesticated attempt though - I don't think any professional is going to own up to her 'make up' which is self-applied if at all; and look at her 'costume' when she first appears. There is little attention to the over-pressed detail of everything being bought 20 minites before filming started!Despite the excellent on-screen crackle of their intimacy, Janssen is an iconic presence more suited for the blockbuster (although I'd love to see Haeneke get his hands on her in Europe). As for the film, give it to your sister for Christmas and no-one loses face. 5.5/10
