It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

A film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.

German composer Max Richter who also scored Waltz with Bashir (2008) and Shutter Island (2010) scores a beautiful and haunting musical landscape that matches the contemplative directing from Australian writer/director Cate Shortland. It never failed to captivate me at every scene and with every note. Similarly the sound is amazing in every detail and add layers to the sometimes sparse dialog.Saskia Rosendahl is stellar as breakthrough difficult and subtle role to portray. The directing is very good and allows glimpses of human feelings, frailty, fear and frugality in the midst of madness.A slow, steady and apt examination of difficult situations, death and horror, seen by an unprepared, misinformed youth. Aren't we all also unprepared and misinformed in many ways?

I absolutely love this movie. Its one of those drawn out and action over words movie (or in other words, "analyzing" movie) , so you have to paid attention. I'm glad i found it Netflix. The movie was intense. It made me question how people we label as "bad" think of us. Also, the "staring match" that was going on between the two main characters was indescribable. I want to said that it was wrong what was going on with them, considering she was suppose to be 14. BUT, i had hope there was a happy ending. However, I still love the ending, way more realistic and tragic. After watching the movie, I was "hooked" for days. All I thought about was LORE. I searched for anything I could find out about LORE. I didn't want it to be over. Especially, with the unanswered questions (who is Thomas?). BUT i gotta confessed those questions made me love it more. I'm so upset that I can't find the alternate ending. Supposedly, it's not available in some countries.

A family of five children, left alone from their parents, is forced to travel through Germany searching for their grandma and some peace. It ain't easy to make a movie so weak about the WWII aftermath, but Lore try his best. Children, death and despair all together should suggest some tears but not in this case. The young characters are confused and confusing, the cinematography serve the only purpose to bask itself in close up and flares and everything, despite the argument, is beautiful and equal, just like a commercial. The director had a good story to tell - from an unoriginal point of view I must say - but she ends portraying only the doubts of a Nazi teenager

While I would agree that this movie was beautifully filmed and acted with majestic cinematography, it is not a story that needs to be told. This is a story of, essentially, victimizers being portrayed as victims! After the war, young, overly privileged Nazi children have to trek across Germany for a short time, relying on a young Jewish man for survival, until they reach grandma's house and continue their over privileged and unscathed lives. There are some hardships along the way, don't get me wrong, like being unable to cross borders, only having fruit and bread to eat, and having to sell family heirlooms. There are some touching moments but, for the most part, these children are entirely oblivious, and this movie downplays, the suffering around them and, conversely, makes their moments of difficulty more pronounced. This is most visibly seen by the second eldest daughter who, the day following their arrival at grandma's house, is seen dancing happily with the maid; entirely oblivious to the world around her. The eldest girl, Lore, superficially pieces together the actions of her parents without really understanding the depth and breadth of their doings. Overall, while beautifully made, I found the story to be ridiculous. I do not sympathize or recognize the suffering of these over privileged children who had to forage through a forest for a short time to ultimately arrive at grandma's house; who seems to be untouched by war. One might argue that this it's a different perspective on a genre that's been extensively covered. I argue that this is not a relevant one. I found the handling of the subject matter to be done trivially.Let's do a follow up, children of drug lords suffering because they cannot afford another Maserati and have to drive a Porsche instead; rather than dealing with the violence and devastation their actions have on the people and communities around them.
