Watch something else. There are very few redeeming qualities to this film.

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The joyful confection is coated in a sparkly gloss, bright enough to gleam from the darkest, most cynical corners.

One of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.

I saw this at the Sedona film festival in 97 and found it captivating. Esmé Lammers has put together movie young and old will never forget. My only sadness is not being able to share this movie with my children, as it does not appear to be available to buy even though it has received many awards. What a shame that so many may never see a film that is truly magical. If anyone knows how to buy this on video please post it here.

Although this film is meant for children. I think that anyone would enjoy it. It is a joyfull film about a little girl who misses her father and is sucked into a fantasy world with a real life chessboard (all very friendly). Of course there is a happy ending.
