It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

This is meant for a special crowd, who like musicals....and a cheesy story as a wrapper.Actually, I watched this movie because of Dolly Parton. I've just seen her live in concert not long ago. She really rocked the house... Personally, I think, she is a fab actress as well but these modern American movies don't do justice. It's a modern Romeo and Juliette kind of story. Certainly watchable when nothingelse is on.I gotta admit though, The Gospel music was FANTASTIC!!! If you care for a good Gospel but don't like movies - go and buy that soundtrack. It's ear candy, so to speak ;)But the script is mostly boring and packed with foreseeable lines. But I sat through cos Queen Latifah has a very enjoyable speech melody.Okay, summary: Gospel = 10script = 3Dolly/Queen = 10acting = 5

As a small town, racially diverse gospel choir negotiates the demands of a national competition, it transmutes out of sheer panic into an ad hoc musical theatrical ensemble. Many eras and styles of music emerge throughout. When Keke Palmer, as Queen Latifa's daughter, performs 'Higher Medley,' she reminded me of Harold Nicholas' (of the Nicholas brothers) be-bop crooning style in the 'Big Broadcast of 1936,' There is also the atmospheric blaze of everything from the 'Show Boat' era to synthesized pop music from the 80's to the present. This mix is laced with covers from among others, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Usher, Billy Preston, and of course the inimitable Dolly Parton herself. Several members of the cast derive from the world of Broadway, and the sum of the above yields musical theatre so stunning that if there were no plot at all the film would still stand as sensational.Yet the plot itself has its subtle importance. It flows by with an almost Bergman quality, presenting a montage of innocent moments, each containing small, significant messages. Like 'Show Boat', this film puts its emphasis on the triumph of musical theatre over the mundane, yet it indefatigably unfurls its intention to correct the wrongs of post modern life: Queen Latifa struggles to actually dominate the ethical processes of the children around her; Dolly, using her legendary, angelic soul force, struggles with Latifa's weariness; young people, as they blossom and find themselves, engage in the timeless struggle to listen to their parents. All the while there's so little needless tension one might call this film both deeply feminist and serenely African, in the best sense of each.

As a born again Christian, I loved this movie! Yes, there was cussing and out of marriage sex, but, guess what-Christians do this and God still loves them. Music is incredible...for me, this movie was a great reminder that God loves us, and if we let Him, He will make us better! Loved the "Fix me, Jesus" song. Give the movie a try and see if you don't smile! I plan to buy the soundtrack of this movie. Loved most of the songs. Dolly Parton has still got it! Queen Latifah, what a voice! Really enjoyed the Olivia and Randy characters...such sweet voices, both of them! Keke Palmer has grown into such a beautiful young lady. Praise His Name and let Him take you higher!

I was disappointed. I love Dolly! And I'm a huge fan of Kris Kristofferson and Queen Latifah, but I am amazed that Kirk Franklin would have anything to do with this movie. It was a prime example of churches behaving humanistic-ally, filled with Christians behaving like the rest of the world...using bad language, dis-respecting authority, using the Lord's name in vain, lying, and having one-night stands. Brings to mind the the answer I saw recently from a sidewalk interview clip, where the interviewer asked a passersby if they knew any Christians, and they said yes, but the ones they knew behave like everybody else. The portrayal of Christians in this movie just helps keep that image going......Shame on y'all!
