Wow! Such a good movie.

... View MoreI guess there's no point watching this if you don't like Daft Punk, as the whole film is just their critically-acclaimed (for good reason) album 'Discovery', bought to life in animation. But, there is certainly much for non-fans and newcomers to enjoy in this truly magical film.Well, for a start, the music is great. 'Discovery' is considered one of the definitive dance music albums; there's not a bad song on the whole thing, and any fan of electronic will certainly love hearing it. But the animated story adds a whole new emotional layer to the music. Of course, the animation is highly stylised and anyone not tolerant of stylised anime (people who think it looks 'weird') will not enjoy, but as for me? It's beautiful, I loved every second of it.And the emotional quality of the film struck me hard. I was touched in a way few films touch me. At times I shivered and by the end I was in tears. The final shot of the film is probably the most magical and beautiful shots I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of films. And Daft Punk's cameo was so unexpectedly hilarious, that's a key point too. This film touched me, it meant a lot to me, and though it may not be for everyone, fans of Daft Punk and anime will love it to bits, as I did.
... View MoreIt was a good concept but far from original and suffered from a case of poor excection.Disney's Fantasia did the whole "animated movie told through music" bit so much better than this. Some of the songs feel like they do not sync with the footage on screen. Its feel is similar to some newbie anime music video editor who threw together a random scene that makes no sense within the context of the song's lyrics.Leigi Matsumoto's animation manages to save this movie. The artwork is gorgeous and the animation is top notch for a 2003 movie productionl; fluid yet retaining its level of detail throughout. The implied story is easy enough to follow. A band of blue skinned music stars are kidnapped, brainwashed and made into a big money earner for a greedy earth coporation. As their fame on earth grows, they suffer the exhaustion of endless concerts and maketing deals take their toll on the band. It is up to their greatest fan, a fellow blue skinned alien named "Shep" to rescue them. However, as the movie nears its conclusion, the story just gets cheesier and cheesier. Something about accumulating 5555 records that allows the main bad guy the power to rule the galaxy. Though the animation is quite good, nothing else really stands out. Also, if you aren't a fan of Daft Punk's music, they soundtrack(which is the ONLY source of audio) would start to grate on your eardrums after a while. That nasal electronica voice repeating the same words over and over again.............Interstella 5555 would have been so much better as an actual animated film with full dialogue and Daft Punk's songs as Background music.A truly wasted opportunity there.I cannot see this film appealing to anyone other than fans of such genre of music, fans of Leiji Matsumoto, and fans of poorly synced, home made anime music videos(tons of those on youtube).
... View MoreThis movie, which only runs an hour long, still feels like a movie to me. As an Anime with no dialogue and communicates by visual storytelling, it is seriously one movie that had me hooked. The songs are catchy and toe tapping, my ankle was actually sore from so much foot tapping from the addictive drum beats and technological hooks. There was one part where I felt the movie would have been a bore, without giving too much away, it happens right after the first song ends, where I would expect raucous noises during a moment where large audiences are seen, I'd be used to hearing screaming or sounds of panic, which did not happen, and for that, I felt slightly gypped, but for the most part, the songs and animation compliment each other, as the animation is beautiful (though it's hardly Hayao Miyazaki quality) while giving the aliens a human look, and the humans an alien quality. These anime characters look nothing like Powerpuff Girls with very large eyes as most anime television shows tend to do, but instead feel like real people at times. Also, as the ending plays out, I had to crack a big smile at its "Twist" of an ending. It was something I did not expect at all, since the story was especially intriguing. This is an anime movie I will indeed watch again.I only wished I could rate this movie in half stars too, because it's not a 8 or 10 to me, but a 9.5, which I feel gives the movie the appropriate credit it deserves.
