Unshakable, witty and deeply felt, the film will be paying emotional dividends for a long, long time.

The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.

This was a real good movie. Later in time in the Dominican Republican they had a government named Trujillo. What ever Trujillo said went. If someone in the household did something bad, the man of the house would be the one to be sent to prison, killed , or tortured. At a party one of the Mirabal sisters got into it with Trujillo after he touched her butt and she slapped him. She was the outgoing one out of the sisters. She felt as though he deserved it because he disrespected her by doing that. There father was soon captured and sent to prison and tortured. Years later the Mirabal sisters and their husband were arrested for spreading the word about Trujillo. The Mirabal sisters were let out first but they kept their husbands imprisoned. One day they were coming back from the prison to try and get their husbands out and on the way back they were stopped on the road because Trujillo felt that they had done wrong. They were dragged into a collard patch and beaten to death and killed. This movie was really really good you should watch it too.

The movie In The Time Of The Butterfly was an excellent movie, I really enjoyed the fact that three women, sisters at that were able to stand out and speak up about how their dictator Rafel Trujillo was treating women in the Dominican Republic. Rafel Trujillo was a strict dictator who was cruel to his citizens. At the end the three sisters were killed because Rafel Trujillo but a hit out on them. I wanted yto cry because women had no respect after what they had done. Then Rafel Trujillo was killed afterwards by some men on a empty road. You should try to take the time out and enjoy the movie.

This adaptation of Julia Alvarez's novel is just terrible. I am not a huge fan of the novel itself, so I was not too worried when I heard the film divulged from the novel. I saw this film in lit class after we had read the novel, and about halfway through the film my teacher commented, "Why is this called 'In the Time of the Butterflies?'" I would have to agree with her on that account. The events of the film differ so greatly from that of the novel that I wonder if the same story is even being told.Worse than that, though, is the lack of depth or development in the characters. Instead of concentrating on all four sisters as the novel did, the film concentrates on Minerva as the main character. This is actually a good decision because the character development is so weak with just one story I would be frightened to imagine what it would be with all four stories. The character development is integral to the novel, and without it the film's melodrama seems comical.Worse than THAT is the acting in this movie. The one good part of this movie is Salma Hayek, as her acting, while one-dimensional (not at all like Minerva from the novel), is good, and she also looks very good. Everyone else in this movie acts really just TERRIBLY. I have seen many movies, many of which I did not like, but I say with a straight face that this movie has the worst acting I have ever witnessed in a film. Trujillo, the "villain," is the most wooden character I have ever seen on a professionally made movie. Slightly less annoying is that people are split half and half with accents and without accents, which is just sloppy. Cuba Gooding Jr. is horrendous in a throwaway role that has been changed quite a bit from the original novel. This film's biggest weakness is that we see the events that occur as outsiders. There is no character development and therefore no emotional attachment to the characters, which is integral to understand the tragedy that occurred to these sisters (I don't believe this is a spoiler since this is based on factual events). If you want to fully appreciate the Mirabal sisters as people then read Julia Alvarez's novel, "In the Time of the Butterflies." I would recommend this film only if you want to laugh at a movie because it is so bad.

By watching this movie, I was educated in that women are abused severely in so many other cultures for reasons we take for granted in the United States. I did not know that women in the Dominican Republic were abused and/or beaten to death for protesting corruptness. I am an American born Black woman of Hispanic origin (Puerto Rican heritage).A lot of us born to Black women and Hispanic fathers outside of wedlock do not know much of our heritage due to the separation of our parents and most of us are raised solely as Black children. As an adult, I am embracing my Hispanic heritage. I need to learn more of my father's culture. I cannot learn from him because he has passed on, but he never stopped looking for his ángela negra pequeña.I plan to use this movie in my English Literature class in honor of March's Women's month. We must abolish domestic violence against women all over the world! Women are the creatures God put on this earth to reproduce. Such violence against women must end. What better place to deter violence against women than educating young men in school. Please continue to bring new material to us.
