Brilliant and touching

At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

The subject of the movie is important, although it would have been nice if the message had been delivered with more subtlety. As it is, the viewer gets hit over the head, repeatedly, with the message that HURTING INNOCENT PEOPLE IS WRONG, which won't be news to the millions of people who go around their daily lives without hurting innocent people.The plot and screenplay are both okay. The best scenes are those illustrating the hellish difficulty of working as a (young) doctor or nurse in a large and modern city, especially in an emergency ward.Hugh Grant proves that he does, indeed, have acting talent, although many viewers will laugh their heads off when viewing countless scenes in which Grant cries, despairs, flees, schemes, thinks, runs, crawls, etc etc without messing up his boyishly rakish haircut. Mrs. Parker on the other hand might be replaced by, say, a cactus, a vase of flowers, a dictionary or a bottle of soda.

This well-executed hospital thriller is only marred by trying to make Hugh Grant into an action hero when quite obviously he isn't cut out for that type of role. Thus, amid the fairly interesting conspiracy parts of the film, we get some generic action components like a fight in a lift and a shootout on an underground train track. If the makers had dropped these and concentrated on more subtle methods to get Grant - like the great scene where he finds cocaine planted in his apartment - then this would have been a better film altogether.As it stands, EXTREME MEASURES is a competent film, very good in places but as a whole just about average. The whole "conspiracy" aspect of the film is a clichéd one by now, but its kept realistic and never fails to be suspenseful. The film successfully engages the viewer into wanting to find out the truth behind all of the mystery at the beginning. The cast is packed with familiar faces and the performances are generally all on the good side. I'll make no apology that I personally dislike Hugh Grant; but I'll grudgingly admit that he's not bad here in one of his rare non-comedy roles. Gene Hackman is second-billed as the chief villain, but he only gets about twenty minutes screen time so doesn't get to make much of an impact, but hey, he's Gene Hackman. David Morse (THE LANGOLIERS) does his stony-faced villain role again (I prefer him as a good guy) while Sarah Jessica Parker is pretty much wasted as a fellow doctor, with absolutely nothing to do.This film's real problem is that the bad guys are actually doing their surgery for the good of mankind; they're just going about it unethically. This means that Hackman can't be made out to be too much of a villain; as basically his heart and spirit are in the right place. This aspect of his character goes at odds with the action-thriller's demand for violence and murder, so on one hand we watch him carry out beneficial surgery, and on the other he's barking out orders to have Grant killed. It doesn't make much sense and so makes the last half hour of the film a very uneasy one, where we're asked to sympathise with murderers after all. I get the feeling that the scriptwriter had dug himself into a hole and wasn't sure how to get out at this point.However, there is an excellent interlude about halfway through where Grant ventures down below the subway system into a spooky world where all the homeless live. This echoes the likes of DEATH LINE, C.H.U.D., and THE NIGHT STRANGLER in its depiction of a frightening world hidden from our own, and is one of my favourite themes in film. There are also plenty of suspenseful bits too, which keep this flawed film from ever getting boring. EXTREME MEASURES is watchable and for the most part intelligent but, due to the story's indecisiveness about its villains, not brilliant.

This movie is very relevant in this day and age with the on slot of diseases and people who are searching for the answers. Hugh Grant playing the moral side of this left and right medical thriller. The big question brought up in this film is that of medical morals that have been brought up in many movies and in the thoughts of many people, " Would you kill many people to save lives in the name of medicine?"Hugh Grant is amazing as the hero Doctor Guy Luthan. His character works feverishly to find the truth of," What is going on with this mysterious men that come into his life, why his life is being destroyed and what is "Triphase"?" This is a good movie of Hugh Grant's and shows how he works well as a serious actress which I think he should go back to. Go rent this movie or check HBO for the next time it appears.

In this movie, Hugh Grant proves he can do so much more than romantic comedies. I could easily picture him in one of the hospital shows on TV. Gene Hackman is good too, but David Morse - a personal favorite - is surprisingly stiff and boring. Sarah Jessica Parker isn't even worth mentioning.So what can I say about the plot? Well, the beginning is interesting, and a little spooky. After that a quick cut to the hospital where we reveal the most idiotic name anyone could have ever thought of. I mean, Guy Luthan?? Despite the intriguing plot, it eventually stretches too far and becomes quite ridiculos. And then, as we enter the under ground, my suffering is beyond belief. A very fuzzy climax where David Morse's lack of enthusiasm becomes even more obvious. This movie could have been a lot better if it hadn't made all those mistakes that could have been avoided so easily. Although, it was fun to see Hugh Grant's rom com character peek out in this mildly efficient thriller - which doesn't make his acting worse but adds sympathy to his character and makes him more likable.
