Fantastic!
... View MoreSimple and well acted, it has tension enough to knot the stomach.
... View MoreIt isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.
... View MoreI didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
... View MoreIn 60 B.C., druids led by Guttuart (Max von Sydow) witness a comet and prophesies the coming of a king to oppose the Romans. Vercingetorix (Christopher Lambert) lost his father when his uncle Gobanittio conspired with the Romans. Guttuart nurtured him to be the king of Gaul. Julius Caesar (Klaus Maria Brandauer) befriends the unknown young man as he kills his uncle to avenge his father. He joins Caesar to invade Britannia for half of the booty. The Gaul tribes are double-crossed by Caesar after one of the leaders revolted. Vercingetorix raises an army to battle Caesar. The opening of a comet traveling in space lays out the movie's high ambitions. At times, this is a big production. It's the hubris that makes the fall so much greater. The dialog is horribly clunky and laughable. The dubbing is terrible reminiscent of the bad dubbing from earlier time. Lambert is not a particularly subtle actor but he could fit the role. His hair is so ridiculous that it's almost hopeless to take him seriously. There are great actors in this and it's so sad to see them in this. Director Jacques Dorfmann is simply over his head. Even the extras look uncertain. Dorfmann has no sense of cinematic style. He is more or less being one of those weekend re-enactors. I'm not even going to dig into any historical inaccuracies. I don't really care about that if this is a good movie. It's not.
... View MoreThis is one of those strange movies, that despite being in the "so bad it's good" category, it's really not bad enough to be in there. It's a mediocre straight to video movie that can be enjoyable. Ultimately it fails but in quite a few good ways. Definitely a must have for the bad movie crowd. Decent enough rental if you want a popcorn movie you don't have to think about. A few things that keep it from breaking past a 5 is the extremely tired acting. I prefer to see people have fun with bad performances, not have the "oh my god we ran out of money" look on their faces. Also, I don't think they captured the rivalries between the Gallic groups (tribes?) very well. They came off as petty children and not trained warriors with too much pride. Though it's probably a subjective complaint I just generally don't like "childish brutes" in place of warriors. Definitely better than most Steven Seagal movies anyways.
... View MoreFirst of all, I'm surprised that Max Von Sydow accepted a part in this film. He is one of my favorite actors (with Toshiro Mifune), he impressed me in the Seventh seal, and many other Bergman movies. I must say, this movie doesn't deserve an actor like him. I'm not a big Christopher Lambert fan, but I admit he did some great movies like Greystoke or Highlander. But come on....... once again the acting is awful. I mean he keeps the same expression throughout the movie, regardless of the feelings he's supposed to show. As concerns the film itself, I don't understand whether this is supposed to be a historical movie or a fantasy. I first thought it wanted to respect History and stick to the real story, but then they start using magical powers, so I don't get it. If they can use their powers, then why don't they win at the end ? Besides, some things are really not credible. For instance, when Vercingetorix comes out of the forest with the druid and finds out there is a Roman road being built. It was just next to where he lives and he never heard of it before ??? Right after that Julius Caesar comes, and asks him to fight on his side ! I just can't believe how stupid this is. So I would not recommend you this movie at all, unless you study cinema and want to know what you shouldn't do.
... View MoreI first saw this movie when I was very sick, and I still enjoyed it immensely. Christopher Lambert (Highlander) is well-cast here as Vercingetorix, a Gaul who united his people against Julius Ceasar during the Gallic wars. Max Von Sydow! (Exorcist) plays the chief druid, and he's very good here. Klaus Maria Brandauer (Out of Africa) plays Ceasar and other than Rex Harrison in "Cleopatra" I don't think any actor has done better. For a change in this file every character feels real, they are all flawed and make horrible mistakes, but all are trying to help their people. The action scenes are good and the pacing of the film is fine, though it is a bit too long.Ines Sastre does nicely in a very underwritten role as Vercingetorix' Queen. The major problem with the movie is that Dorfmann is not a very good director, his angles are poor and many shots feel rushed or incomplete. It keeps this from being a great film, though its still a good one. If you liked "Braveheart" or "Man in the Iron MAsk" check this out!
