At first rather annoying in its heavy emphasis on reenactments, this movie ultimately proves fascinating, simply because the complicated, highly dramatic tale it tells still almost defies belief.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

Dick Turpin is a famed highwayman who is best known for his ride from London to York on his horse Black Bess.In fact he hunted the area close to The Spaniards Inn not far from where i live.In this film he is portrayed by Victor McLaglen who is hardly the subtlest of actors who tended to overact in most things he did.Contrast this with James Mason in "The Wicked Lady" and you can see how the part should have been played. This film is clumsy and ham fisted in every area. You look at the sword fight climax which seems to have been filmed in the semi gloom with the climatic sword fight between Flynn and Rathbone in "Robin Hood" only 5 years later. It is like comparing the work of amateurs and professionals. The only point of note is the appearance of Lewis Gilbert, the future director,in a small part.
