Ok... Let's be honest. It cannot be the best movie but is quite enjoyable. The movie has the potential to develop a great plot for future movies

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

If there is a better psychological thriller, I'd like to see it. Michel is a nasty master at a school where two young women work. They despise him. He is cruel to them. He is cruel to the students. When the have had enough they decide to kill him. They invite him to their place and drug him, later drowning him in a bathtub. The body is easily gotten rid of. I won't say any more because it would ruin everything. This will keep you on the edge of your seat. This has incredible pacing and atmosphere. There is that plotting where one wonders when the next shoe will fall. This is so Hitchcock-like. Amazing.

A second-rate boarding school on the outskirts of Paris is run by the tyrannical and mean Michel Delassalle (Meurisse). The school is owned, though, by Delassalle's teacher wife, the frail Christina (Clouzot). Delassalle also has a relationship with Nicole Horner (Signoret), another teacher at the school. Rather than antagonism, the two women are shown to have a somewhat close relationship, primarily based on their apparent mutual hatred of Michel, who is physically and emotionally abusive to both, as well as unkind to the children.Unable to stand his mistreatment any longer, Nicole devises a plan to get rid of Michel forever. Though hesitant at first, Christina ultimately consents to help Nicole. Using a threatened divorce to lure Michel to Nicole's apartment building in a town several hundred kilometers away, Christina sedates him. The two women then drown him in a bathtub and, driving back to the school, dump his body in the neglected swimming pool. When his corpse floats to the surface, they think it will appear to have been an accident. Almost everything goes according to their plans until the body fails to surface. Michel's corpse is nowhere to be found when the pool is drained.Nicole sees in the paper that the police have found the corpse. However, when Christina goes to the morgue, she finds it is not actually Michel's body. There she meets Alfred Fichet (Vanel), a retired senior policeman now working as a private detective. He becomes involved in the case, much to Nicole's chagrin.

LES DIABOLIQUES is a mystery thriller full of surprises and suspense. The director of a boarding school in France sadistically abuses his wife and his mistress. Two women come together in the murder of a overbearing husband. The seemingly perfect murder turns into a nightmare, because the corpse mysteriously disappears. Women are witnessing the everyday phenomena that points to the fact that the director of the boarding school is still alive...The beginning of the film is done in a typical French style with a lot of raw passion and sadism. The main villain is a ruthless tyrant, which applies to everyone with the same level of violence. It is a fascinating relationship between two women. They love each other, respect, empathize and hate at the same time. A psychological drama turns into an exciting thriller that at certain moments borders with a horror. Mr. Clouzot uses his, already recognizable, morbid style. The atmosphere is great. It changes throughout the film, along with rising tensions that eventually all ended with a climatic explosion. This recipe will become recognized by most of the psychological thriller. The script is also very good without being illogical, which is common in thrillers and mysteries.Véra Clouzot as Christina Delassalle is the wife, who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. There is an interesting traditional relationship with her husband and marriage in general. Her sense of guilt and anxiety corresponded to the tension in the film. Simone Signoret as Nicole Horner is swift and icy as the mistress who plans everything. Paul Meurisse as Michel Delassalle is the protagonist who keeps the audience awake. The villain that is difficult to understand, and yet it was pleasant to see him in the frame. Dead or alive, absolutely not essential.A conspiracy is enough for a good thriller. Double conspiracy is not desirable for those with a weak heart.

Les diaboliques is a compelling mystery with a hint of crime & horror elements. It is about two women who conspire to murder their lover and the mysterious series of events that occur after his body disappears. The two protagonists', Nicole Horner (Simone Sgnoret), and Christina Delasalle (Véra Clouzot), performances helped add the horror aspect to the movie. They were captivating and navigated skillfully the guilt- determination dilemma. The settings were not that varied yet sufficient to the story's development and the lightning tricks helped fuel the viewer's curiosity and attachment to the story line. The innovative, eventful story line is complemented by the actors' performances and a spot on cinematography to amount to one of the few movies that could compete with Hitchcock in the genre he defined. An appropriate tag-line for the movie would be "things aren't always what they seem"It's a classic masterpiece of the genre that any film aficionado should not miss.
