Death Becomes Her (1992) ** 1/2 (out of 4)Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep) is a cruel and self centered woman who will do anything to hurt her rival Helen (Goldie Hawn) and this includes stealing her fiancé Ernest (Bruce Willis). Fast forward seven years and Helen is now overweight with no life but after a stint in a mental hospital she straightens out and plans her revenge. It turns out both women have taken a certain potion to keep them young but they're not quite ready for the side effects.DEATH BECOMES HER features two legendary actresses, a more than capable actor and a director like Robert Zemeckis and yet it never really takes off. It's really too bad because all of the elements are here for a good movie but it falls just short thanks to one major problem with the screenplay. It does feature some wonderful special effects that sets it apart but this wasn't enough to completely save the film. The problem with the movie is the fact that all three characters are rather ugly, annoying and you just don't like them. This would work just fine if this were a black comedy but it really doesn't go for much dark humor and instead most of the humor comes from the silly special effects. The screenplay offers up two women fighting over a man but is this really anything we haven't seen before? The entire story is just on the boring side and it takes nearly a hour for the effects to kick in.Once the film turns into a special effects showcase it picks up a little bit. There are some funny sequences once both women realize that they're dead and their bodies can do all sorts of strange things including their necks breaking, gunshot wounds healing and various other forms of violence. Just think of The Three Stooges with two ladies and you get the idea. The only problem is that it's not nearly as funny as it could have been. Or should have been considering the talent involved.Streep is certainly game for the role of an uptight you know what. She turns in a good performance as does Hawn in her supporting bit. THe two have a nice chemistry together but their characters suffer from a lesser screenplay. Willis is also good in his role playing a mad Dr. Frankenstein type of character. Isabella Rossellini is fun in her supporting role,DEATH BECOMES HER is mildly interesting for its cast and special effects but this is clearly a film where the story took a backseat because everyone wanting to showcase the new effects.

KillerRomance

This is one of the best comedies of the 1990's and it is now lived up to the true classic that foretells every woman's nightmare and every man's horror when the Witch Queen of full Beauty wants to stay as the Snow White.Madeline Ashton is a washed up Actress (played marvellously by the versatile Oscar winner and the best actress in show business according to critics and audience is Meryl Streep) and when her Childhood rival Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn) brings in Fiancé Dr Ernest Menville (Bruce Willis) and swiftly before Helen can say "smiley faces", Madeline takes Ernest away and betrothed, then Helen plots revenge that is better than murder, and soon Madeline encounters the mysterious Mr Chagall and recommends the answer to faded flower Madeline's wishes of ageless Beautiful enchantress and witch Elesle Van Rhuman (Isabella Rossellini). Death becomes her is an enchanting take that takes you into the hilarious life's of three vain, narcissistic Californians who all strive for different goals in their lives.Meryl Steep have an Oscar worthy performance as Madeline Aston who's biggest fear is lose her name and youth. When a witch gives her the chance for eternal life she good on board no matter the consequences.Goldie Hawn never looked better and plays the equally dashing Helen looking for revenge in a similar style to episodes of tales from the crypt. All the performances were top notch and with a script this good you couldn't lose no matter how it was cut. What makes it once and a life time film is that the talent that draw you in and make you feel sympathy for a life time wasted on petty life problems that could be solved in a psychiatrist's office in fifteen minutes. In one way or another they are made victims of themselves instead of trying to be happy with who they are.Another warning is at what price are we willing to pay for beauty. Money, our families or your soul? What seems like a dream come true can become an absolute nightmare. Almost like a caution against cosmetic surgery which rights your face and changes the natural form. This isn't really for the regular joes looking a quick laugh. Its set up in macabre dark ways that happen in rotation and I won't spoil for you here. But its worth the price of admission. It will be the most fun you had in ages.

Death becomes her is a very funny movie that has a powerhouse cast. It tells the story of two female friends. Hill (Goldie hawn) brings her boyfriend (Bruce Willis) to a show that her friend Madeline (Meryl Streep) is in, and Bruce Willis is instantly smitten with Madeline. They get married, leaving Hill in complete and utter rage. She becomes obscenely obese and attends therapy at an institution for her issues. Then she hatches a plan that involves Madeline, and that's where our plot begins. The acting is good overall. I loved Streep and Hawn in their roles and they had wonderful on screen chemistry together, their rivalry was very convincing. The dialogue is funny, there are many humorous lines scattered throughout the script. The special effects are very impressive, especially back when this was first released. The movie won a very well deserved academy award for its visual effects. The movie is recommend because of its clever writing, talented acting, and very well done visual effects. Death becomes her gets a 7/10.
