It is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

It is encouraging that the film ends so strongly.Otherwise, it wouldn't have been a particularly memorable film

This is how you tell a story without throwing huge amounts of cash at it. The casting is superb, every actor clearly understands how real people behave and deliver dialogue. Only reason I gave it a 9 instead of a 10 is that it's a stand alone film and not a series or trilogy because I would have been front row on opening day of all the sequels. Perfect job by all concerned, a definite must see.

I appreciate when movies can take me to places and around people I would never want to see, but which demonstrate universal truths and archetypes about humanity. This movie gives you a solid portrayal of a man consumed by the past, of people who treat others as objects, and of people who don't have the stones to stand up for what's right. This is the best (and most disturbing) movie I've seen in quite a while. The casting, the story, the acting, and the music were all excellent. Despite the dark subject matter, there were some legitimately funny parts as well, and the music kept the movie from feeling cold and impersonal - which for me left a more nuanced and lasting impression. If you've ever pondered the question "Do some people deserve to die?", where that line should be drawn, and can handle some very dark and violent scenes, this is the movie for you.

Dead Man's Shoes is almost like a Clint Eastwood, shot without the glory of Hollywood and a high budget. Instead this film leaves a devastating effect through it's immense realism. I feel this realism is created through the brilliance of acting, along with the bleak English feel, and the dialogue that seems entirely accurate to the characters who speak it. By this I mean the script is not over- dramatised, but is rather fully believable. The soundtrack was by artists unknown to me, and the songs used are both of great quality and are used to a great effect to emphasise the emotion of each scene. At one point the music gradually builds up until the speaking of an actor is entirely drowned out, it is remarkable how through this, emotion is conveyed without the need for dialogue. Just by the brilliant acting and the expressions on the characters face, you gain a full understanding of what is being spoken without knowledge of the words. I feel if I say too much I would be in danger of ruining the fantastic plot. If you are into gritty, emotionally draining films, seriously give this a watch.

In these days of 'bubblegum' entertainment where film makers appear to make films for the lowest common denominator (perhaps driven by the bean counters) Shane Meadows' masterpiece stands out as a mind-blowing piece of revenge drama. Meadows is guided by nothing other than the desire to make the best film possible. Not by the need to fill cinema seats or pump out DVDs by the million. Not by a need to satisfy the BBFC guidelines. I get the feeling that the master director would be as happy if the film was viewed by 1 person or a million as long as he depicted a story that he was happy with. It may sound like hyperbole but in the scene where the scum drive up to the garages in their 2CV (what a paradoxically powerful choice of vehicle by the way. Wanna be gangsters ruling the streets of a Midland town in the old French banger) to confront soldier Considine and Considine states that he has 'them' (the baddies) in the palm of his hand I am sure that this is the most powerful and convincing piece of acting I have ever seen, anywhere in any moment of film or TV. Incomparable film making all round. Finally, a quick nod to the brilliant soundtrack. Superb.
