Let me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.

Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

Best part is that even Churchill had doubts at first. Many in his cabinet had such horrible memories from the huge losses of WW1, that they were willing to sell the farm (appease Hitler). We have 20/20 hindsight, so we think that it was obvious what he should do. Intersting bit is Brigadier Nicholson in Calais. Imagine what you'd feel if you get a message from WSC saying that you will not be evacuated?GOOF: WSC is shown flying to meet the French government and generals in a DC-3 Dakota. Probably not the right plane. DC-3's were around then, (so nice try Mr Director) but not available to the British government. Most likely the plane he used was a de Havilland D.H. 95 Flamingo. There aren't any DH 95's around in real life , so use the DC-3, they still exist.

There's a scene in director Joe Wright's Darkest Hour where Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) travels by the tube and mingles with the citizens of his country. As he walks into the Underground, it feels like any other peculiar scene from the film, but then he finds himself inside a tube car with people around him, standing awestruck and in adoration and respect. I was sitting here in my chair with the same feeling as Oldman's Churchill begins talking while his team is discussing an important treaty in other part of the city. There is no doubt that Darkest Hour is an intelligent drama made with enough doses of humor, politics, and embellishments that usually make up a World War II film, but what works for it is the perfect coagulation of all the ingredients. Watching Darkest Hour is like drinking a gallon of water in the middle of a night. The pleasure that you derive from it - be it from Oldman's terrifically nuanced performance or Dario Marianelli's exhilarating score - will have at least a full-day effect on you. It is a 'slice of history' film made in a way to appease its audience, and I, for one, am thoroughly impressed. It's an energetic affair that will make you get up from your chair, rush to the street, and dance like you have just won a war. TN.

Darkest Hour is a character drama that focuses on a specific moment in British history; it inadvertently serves as the political companion piece to the film Dunkirk which was released the same year. While decently directed, the film's true laurels lie on the head of its lead actor, who completes his transformation into Winston Churchill with commendable realism.

What a performance by Oldman! We saw how brave Churchill was to cry No Surrender and rally the country. With France surrendering and the government working with Hitler within days it was a very dark hour.
