Law enforcement officers Adam Mitchell, Nathan Hayes, and their partners stand up to the worst the streets have to offer with confidence and focus. Yet at the end of the day, they face a challenge that none of them are truly prepared to tackle: fatherhood. They know that God desires to turn the hearts of fathers to their children, but their children are beginning to drift further and further away from them. When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God... and to their children?

Fanciful, disturbing, and wildly original, it announces the arrival of a fresh, bold voice in American cinema.

All that we are seeing on the screen is happening with real people, real action sequences in the background, forcing the eye to watch as if we were there.

Courageous is the story of four deputy sheriffs from Albany, Georgia and a Hispanic day laborer who all agree to become better fathers after one of them loses a daughter to a drunk driver. One of them doesn't quite make it all the way, the four deputies are Ken Bevel, Alex Kendrick, Ben Davies, and Kevin Downes, the laborer is Robert Amaya. The notion here is that fathers ought to become more actively engaged with their kids and the nuclear family is at all times paramount and preferred. Now as we well know families can be derived from a variety of sources and arrangements. This film certainly leaves out same sex couples. But as this is a Christian film we know what the stand on that is.Some decent performances and nice location shooting are Courageous's strongest assets. But I fear this one is for church audiences only.

This is a wonderful movie showing good values and drama, at the same time has funny moments and is very well done. The most important thing is that the topics covered in the movie are educational for our own lives and society. It shows God's design for families, specially the role of the father/husband that's being lost.

Winning an award for 'Most Inspiring Movie', the Kendrick Brothers have produced a film that's more heart-felt and ambitious than their previous productions of 'Fireproof' and 'Facing the Giants'. "Courageous" (2011) is a Christian-drama film directed by Alex Kendrick in partnership with his brother Stephen, that explores the troubles of four sheriffs who struggle with not only with their faith, but fatherhood too. If you're planning to see this movie, be prepared for the gut-wrenching shocks, hysterical laughs and unexpected sobs! The film's opening scene begins by foregrounding a race - a black criminal is caught stealing the car of a more conservative, well dressed black man. This is the start of an adrenaline-pumping, roller coaster ride that won't stop until the credits roll. The film follows a structure of intense gun shots and fighting scenes (dramatic scenes) and quite dialogue (calm scenes) between the characters which 1. creates a balanced storyline that is interesting and 2. provides action for the people who love to watch big explosions and hardcore action (myself included). This is quite contradictory to the religious views of the Kendrick Brothers, as killing and violence is against what is written in the bible -- but at the same time, it provides a modern day retrospect on what society in the 21st century is like. After the movie, it made me think about my morals and beliefs.I found the actual narrative of the film to be quite cheesy and stereotypical at times. I understand that 'Courageous' is aiming for 'realism' in many aspects like costume, production design, framing, etc. but their were too many aspects missing in the narrative to achieve this. Everything just seemed too… 'planned'. Maybe it's the end scene when one of the families are sitting around a dinner table reading, happy as ever, as if they didn't notice one of their family members died a few weeks prior. Or maybe it was the fact that Javier received a promotion when he stood by his morals at the risk of getting fired from his job - both scenarios could happen, but it's unlikely the outcome would happen.Alex Kendrick made a smart move in creating a faith based film with the genre of drama, with comedy in mind (or as I like to call it, dramedy). In Dramedy film, the amount of drama and comedy are almost equally balanced. This balance provides comedic relief for the audience, while still addressing serious issues. It's apparent at the end of the movie that Alex's main aim was to convert people to Jesus Christ, and this was achieved by the tragedy in the intense plot line he created! Mr. Tyson (starred by Rusty Martin Sr.) is faced with the loss of a loved one, and in his sorrow he looks to God, which I thought was really inspiring; a key point in the movie. It made the character(s) re-analyze their outlook on life, and ultimately reconfirmed the drama genre. The characters are complex and well-drawn, struggling with various personal issues that test their morals and beliefs in a believable way. Credits to Alex Kendrick for both directing the movie and starring as one of the main characters (Adam Mitchell) - it's a tough job and Alex created his father persona quite convincingly. Sherwood Pictures casted many family and friends (about 50% of the total number casted), which resulted in mediocre acting by these characters. I found Robert Maya acting as the Mexican father (Javier Martinez) awkward - at times it looked as if he had forgot his lines. I expected a better performance from him seeing as he's from Mexican heritage. More mentionable characters include David Thomas, a young police officer who struggles to face the child he's abandoned (acted by Ben Davies) and Dylan Mitchell, the son of Mr. Tyson (acted by Rusty Martin's son) both who have continued in the acting career and starred in a number of different blockbusters.I would recommend 'Courageous' to anyone - it's a great movie which I'm sure anyone can relate to in one way or another. There may be a few cheesy actors or unrealistic plot holes, but this is definitely outdone by the clean shots and intriguing storyline that 'Courageous' has to offer. The fact that the Kendrick Brothers incorporated an altar call at the end of the movie is amazing! Normal people who may never have heard of Jesus have been informed about the gospel message through the use of media. Hundreds of thousands of people have seen this movie and to be witnessed to at the end, and potentially save their life, is something amazing that Sherwood Pictures have achieved. Overall, I rate this movie 3 stars out of 5. The average rating was 3.5 stars out of 5 (according to IMDb).
