It's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.

The era of crank phone calls has sure taken a twist. When fast food restaurant manager (Ann Dowd) gets a phone call from someone identifying himself as policeman, she springs into action. Young Becky is accused of stealing from a customer. The assistance of the manager and others in this matter grows until it becomes inane. The film brings light to the problem of serial strip search crank calls...something I didn't know existed. This film is based on the Mount Washington, Kentucky incident which BTW was a McDonald's.The film acting was okay. There is a high perv factor whenever you force a young girl to be stripped searched. Unfortunately this is pretty much the entire film as there is no real subplot to entertain us. This is one of those pervert films masquerading as something that makes a statement such as "Shame." Watch it. Enjoy it. Disturbing? Thought provoking? Oh Please. It's soft core porn.Parental Guidance: F-bombs, nudity (Dreama Walker).

If someone rung your fast food restaurant out of the blue, told you he was a police officer, and said you one of your employees had stolen from a customer, and needed to be detained... Would you believe them? If he FURTHER claimed that she had to be strip searched before the cops arrived, and he wanted you to do it there and then, would you say 'yes'? And that's just the beginning of the ordeal...All this sounds far-fetched and exaggerated, but it actually happened 11 years ago to a 19 year old called Louise Ogborn. And if the guy on the other end of the line in real life is as half as convincing as the one playing the role in Compliance, I'm not that surprised they fell for it. His tone has that authority to it, and as one of the duped victims says "He had an answer for every question". What kind of sadistic pleasure you could derive from traumatising a young girl for life when you're not even in the same room I don't know... But the world can be a sick, sick place sometimes I guess...As each indignity upon indignity heaps up on this innocent person who thought she was only there to do a shift, it becomes increasingly more distressing to watch. This is the mood the film strives for, as the viewer might react with incredulity at the fact that anyone could believe this caller's nonsensical story, but thanks to the raw performances and the nuanced plot progression, we eventually can. My the time it's over, you'd probably want to take a long, hot shower. I did too. After getting rid of the limescale around the drain. 7/10

Everyone in this movie is an idiot. OK, I didn't think it still needed explaining, but here it goes... if you have someone calling YOU up (as opposed to you calling them), and they are asking for your personal information (or, ya know, asking your employees to strip naked without the presence of an officer), get their name, and where they are calling from, and tell them you will call THEM back the business they say they are calling from, assuming you know it (like calling the actual police dept). I can't tolerate sheer stupidity. "Hey, bend over, let this guy rape you, etc etc..." the girl just had to say she refuses to anything without a lawyer present (not to mention an officer) and the manager was even more of an idiot.

I've seen a lot of horror movies that are supposed to be scary and yet there aren't many that are as difficult to sit through as this. It was truly horrible - mainly because it's (almost completely) true (I checked online and apparently this really happened almost word for word in a McDonalds restaurant in Kentucky, USA).'Compliance' is basically about a prank call, where a man - pretending to be a police officer - phones a fast food restaurant, claiming one of the employees has stolen some money. What follows is psychological manipulation from him, as he gets the staff to make the employee's life more and more uncomfortable.Part of the problem with choosing to watch a film like this is that you'll find yourself (just like I did), constantly screaming at the characters on screen not to be so absolutely stupid. However, stupid they were in real life, so I guess the worst part about this is that people in real life obviously don't question authority. You won't enjoy this film - even if you like it (and I did in some ways). It's not a film that's meant to be enjoyed; it's there to show us just how easy it is to fool some people with minimal evidence to support their story. If you think that you can sit through an hour and a half of total - real life - torture of an innocent (if slightly naïve) girl then Compliance makes an interesting tale. It is a good film, but in a weird, unbelievably shocking kind of way.
