Camp Hell Trailers

At the end of every summer, the children of a Christian community from a suburb of New Jersey attend Camp Hope. They travel deep into the woods far from any distractions the world provides. Here, the children are taught the ways of the Lord, the perils of the flesh, and the horror of the Devil. A charismatic priest leads them in their training. But, he unknowingly has brought something with him, something evil. What was supposed to be a safe place, a spiritual retreat has now turned into a nightmare that not even faith can end.

Jesse Eisenberg does appear in the movie, but not for long. The movie seems to confuse Christian denominational theology. Traditional Catholics do not believe in "end-time" signs and prophecy. While they do believe in purgatory, they are not that big into it as they used to be. Tommy is connected to a demon, but we aren't sure how and why. There are a bunch of kids at Christian summer camp which is comical as a comic book is torn up and a Journey CD is the instrument of the devil. Tommy keeps asking the question, "If God is in control why is there a devil?" The priest asks Tommy, "When did you let sin into your life?" Of course masturbation is one of Tommy's "gateway" sins. Who knows where it might lead...The sex scene consists of two teens (one a 16 year old virgin "harlot") dry humping in the dark.I will say I was confused by the ending and the message of the movie. Is this an atheist movie or a movie whose message is that Satan uses long drawn out conversions to create atheists by manifesting himself as a demon? Does the movie really mean to say Steve Perry is a demon seed, or makes fun of those who do?As a serious Christian movie, I would give it one star. As a movie that makes fun of Christians...maybe 2 stars. No nudity, or gosh darn swearing. Dry humping, references to rock group "Journey" and Spawn comic book. Kids almost eating jelly beans. What I really can't believe is the "R" rating. As Sara might tweet, "WTF?"

Sent to a missionary camp for teens, a man finds himself targeted by a demonic force intent on driving him insane as he tries to follow the strict doctrine imposed by the camp and tries to find what's going on and why he's being targeted without letting the founders know. For a variety of reasons, this was a really lame horror effort. The most egregious of all these flaws is mainly due to the fact that there's just nothing going on here, as this one was just a chore to get through due to its pace. There are so many scenes throughout here that are just utterly torturous to get through, from their initial bunk inspections to the endless camp sing-a-long sessions, the sharing groups and all the different interactions with the authority figures keep this one moving on at a strictly plodding pace. Although it's clearly the film's intention to spell the significance of these activities through their priority and focus, the fact still remains that there's no energy or effort in this one to get through these scenes as instead they are just utterly lifeless throughout here and really showcase their hypocrisy rather than offering up the chance for horror-based scares, leaving this one so agonizingly slow it might lull you to sleep before getting to the first lame scare. That's another really big problem area to overcome here, in that the film is so heavy-handed in its religious nonsense by wandering through the proceedings with more focus on the bible study and religious teachings than the horror scenes so that it doesn't give off all that many chances to do anything that's remotely concerned with being a horror effort as this portrayal of right-in-their-mindset religious teachings are just so much to take at times that it really makes this one so tough to take with no scares and so much nonsensical religious banter. The last big flaw to be found here is the fact that when it really tries to be a horror film in the first half, it really does fail to excite or thrill as the potential demonic manifestations and hallucinations are kept so short it's hard to make out what exactly you're supposed to be afraid of and they're so infrequently observed it tends to forget exactly what it's supposed to be, basically just showing them off in short, shaky spurts that make it impossible to tell what happened during these segments and really just proving to be a real failure on most fronts. Despite these issues holding it back, there are a few areas that do work here. One of the film's saving graces is having a bit more energy in the last half and actually gets the chance to feature some more traditional horror elements with the series of fine temptations and encounters throughout the camp as the series of scenes playing around with the demonic figures in the cabins or going around possessing the teens still there. Even with these positives, it's still far too little too late for this one.Rated R: Language, Mild Violence and a clothed sex scene.

I always click the "spoiler" button in case something slips, but generally try to avoid letting those things out. Why spoil the surprise or fun or excitement of a movie for others, right? But in this case, as there is no surprise, fun, or excitement in this film, that's not a danger. Let me start off with the good parts. The acting in this film is very good. Granted, the "big names" (McCarthy, Delaney, Eisenberg) have very limited roles, but the relatively unknowns did well with what they had. And now, the spoilers: The first 15 minutes, nothing happens. Then, in the next 30 minutes, things really heat up, and nothing happens. Then you get about 15 minutes of nothing happening. Finally, the movie wraps up with nothing happening. This may be a bit of an exaggeration, but not much. Camp Hell is truly an unfortunate experience and I would save you the pain.

..."Camp Hell" is a perfect example of why producers shouldn't be allowed to write or direct (stick with what you know) as well as a classic case of wasting money. Three million dollars, seriously? Where did it go, up people's noses? Numerous name actors lend their cred to this pitiful excuse for a cautionary tale of the dangers of hidebound religious dogma, and can only be forgiven if they were otherwise out of work. I'm not naming names because I'm pretty sure they're already fairly ashamed of themselves, right, Jesse? Andrew, Dana, Bruce? Are you listening? The youngsters can get away with it; they've still got careers ahead of them, as long as they don't make mistakes like this too often. You adults should know better. Have I reached the minimum word count yet? Good, that's more than enough typing wasted on this dreck. Yet another black mark on the reputation of whoever picks the videos for my local library.
