Joe Slaader is a mysterious mountain man being held in the Ulster County Asylum after the brutal murder of his family. Edward Eischel, a young intern, sees something more than just an inbred monster in this new inmate, however. Instead, he sees him as the harbinger of some greater and much darker force. With bodies piling up, his job in jeopardy, and his sanity hanging in the balance he gives in to his obsession with tapping into Joe's hidden power, risking all that he has along the way.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

It's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.

It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.

And then I forgot and rented it again.Okay, so this is one of the few Lovecraft Adaptations that didn't star Jeffrey Combs. I would say this mess is Lovecraft flavored, but lacks actual elements of Lovecraft horror. An inbred idiot is brought to an asylum, and is found to be the conduit to a extra-dimensional horror that can be unleashed by the mad experiments of a young doctor. The problem with this film is that while it has William Sanderson in it, actually performing his lines like he thought about his character (one dimensional as it was), the rest were dinner theater rejects engaged in massive overacting that would make Shatner cringe. The dialog and action are just excuses to put gore into the movie, where they confusingly keep switching back and forth from color to black and white for no good reason.Again, there were some good actors in the MINOR roles who were actually kind of okay. Sanderson, the fat guy who played the sane doctor. But the main characters were hammy and awful and frankly, you didn't care about the script at all.

Despite the absolutely atrocious acting in this film, the way it was told and visualized was pretty amazing, and very true to the Lovecraft story it came from. The effects used were low budget but still oddly impressive, and for a low budget film I thought it was pretty damn good overall. Yes, the pacing was very slow. Yes, the acting was below amateurish, even downright awful a lot of the time. Yes, the camera angles were below even the quality of a television reality program. However, it was still a brilliantly visualized film, especially the 'backstory' scene and the summoning scene. Overall, it was below what I personally would have preferred in a film based on a Lovecraft story, but I still thought it came to a fantastically visualized, mind blowing conclusion.

As I have learned from reading other comments, I am not alone in saying "Holy s**t!" this thing was awful... Again, great cover art but I've been fooled by that before. The thing that really amazed me, is that it had two directors. You would think that at least one of them would pull the other aside and say "Dude, this film is gonna suck..." I try to find something redeemable in all low budget films, but come on... This is simply terrible, and whom ever paid actual money to distribute this should be ashamed of themselves. The acting is some of the worse ever, there really is no story and production value does not exist. Good job on the artwork, now go away...

I hate a DVD box that has a cool looking scary creature on it and then you rent it and the movie turns out to be a piece of crap. This was one of those movies.I hated this movie. It was one of the worst pieces of garbage I've ever watched.I'm not really sure what the movie was about. As near as I can tell it took place in the early 1900's in an insane asylum.A patient is brought in that has a weird deformity on his back and a young intern who is doing weird experiments on patients in the basement starts experimenting on the deformed patient and that leads to chaos and havoc and death at the asylum. And also there was something about evil things happening when the patient slept and maybe a demon was living in the hump on his back.I dunno. This movie was terrible. It had bad acting, really really bad acting. And horrible writing and all during the movie there were the same pictures of dark woods and bloody meat and little kids running around flashing on the screen over and over.I don't know what it meant nor do I care.Rarely have I seen a movie that was so completely worthless and plot less and pointless as this mess.I hate everyone who had anything to do with this movie.May not a single one of them ever work in the entertainment industry again.I gave this movie a 1 only because the rating system doesn't go any lower.
