Very very predictable, including the post credit scene !!!
... View MoreStory: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
... View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
... View MoreStrong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.
... View MoreOne of my favorite movies of all time is "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." The movie tells the story of a man recently dumped by his girlfriend who uses a machine to erase all his memories of the relationship. The machine allows the man to revisit his memories in a dreamlike state in order to completely wipe them. Mid-process, upon seeing all the happy memories he's experienced, the man changes his mind and struggles to preserve at least some memory of the relationship. Think of "Awake" as "Eternal Sunshine"'s sadistic cousin. While not reaching the latter's depth (Or quality) and FAR from perfect, Awake is still a very well acted, disturbing and at times beautiful thriller. Hayden Christensen is absolutely phenomenal as Clay Beresford. Several reviewers, namely Matthew Buck of "Bad Movie Beatdown", have (In my opinion) unfairly criticized his performance in this movie and his perceived "lack of talent." Christensen has long been one of my all-time favorite actors and is, in my mind, one of the best actors under 40. His performances in "Life As A House", "Shattered Glass" and "Awake" all prove this. Christensen gives a very subtle and nuanced performance here, showing a deep but bottled up anxiety throughout the movie; about his relationship with his mother, about his relationship with his fiancé, about making everyone happy and, chiefly, about his health. His anxiety slowly builds and builds throughout the movie into outright horror. When the screaming starts, we feel every cut Beresford does; partly due to intense, visceral monologues from Christensen and partly due to the fact that Clay's just so damn likable. He's established as an almost naively selfless, loving and trusting character who is clearly blinded by his own compassion. He's the last person who deserves a betrayal this (Physically and emotionally) painful, and the fact that he's such a good, giving person only makes his suffering all the more horrific.Lena Olin does solid work as Clay's mother Lilith. Her character is very well developed throughout the movie from arrogant and somewhat distant to her son to willing to give everything for him. There appears to be an underlying guilt Lilith feels to not being closer or more supportive to Clay that really drives her character through her arc. Her love for her son and desire for the bond they once had gives even more heart, no pun intended, to a movie already full of it."Awake" is just oozing with atmosphere. From it's creepy, chilling musical score to the cold, dead blues of the lighting, the movie definitely succeeds in putting the audience in a very uncomfortable place. The memory sequences are extremely well shot and used in some diverse ways; early on as an escape for Clay from the pain of his ordeal, later on to show the terrible truths Clay was too afraid to confront and near the end to reveal more about his character and the source of his anxiety. Kudos to the filmmakers for giving more than simply one thematic purpose for these scenes, as they add a lot of depth to the story and characters.I do have to say though, "Awake" does have problems. Many doctors (And reviewers) have commented that the medical science shown in the movie is laughable at best, and they are right. If you're in the medical field or are just a stickler for factual accuracy, this movie is not going to work for you and requires a LOT of suspension of disbelief. "Awake" features many twists in its runtime, one involving Clay's fiancé Sam, played by Jessica Alba. To be perfectly honest, the twist involving Sam seems wholly unnecessary and put in the movie solely to get a few gasps. It's gimmicky, borderline cartoonish and adds extremely little to the story. However, despite a stupid plot twist and a fair share of medical inaccuracies and plot holes, "Awake" is still a great psychological thriller to watch with great acting, a highly disturbing premise, some chilling atmosphere and a very well written and likable protagonist. While I wouldn't go so far as to call it "scary", it DEFINITELY get goosebumps.
... View MoreA millionaire finds himself awake during heart surgeryStarring Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba and Lena OlinWritten and Directed by Joby HaroldThis is a surprisingly good film although I didn't really fancy it.It's quirky and different from anything I have seen before and the plot kept me intrigued all the way through. There aren't really any brilliant acting performances but they all did just enough to make it a decent movie. Probably the pick of the bunch was Lena Olin who outshone everybody in the acting department. Overall not the best movie I've ever seen but worth a watch. But a few twists and turns.7.5/10
... View MoreWhat I liked in this movie:Most of the characters performance and reactions. - The acting staff performance (actors and actresses). - The directing of the movie..very beautiful presentation and appropriate visual views. What I didn't like in this movie:Lot of missing links at the beginning that will appear at the end of the movie..by choosing that timing made me little bored to continue watching. - Plugging the unnecessary scenes and elements (in my point of view) that also caused me giving up and fast forward the movie to skip those scenes at the second time I watched the movie. In overall this movie worth watching for the idea it holds, the beautiful cinematic presentation, and performance of the acting staff.
