... View MoreAbsolutely the worst movie.
... View Moreit is the rare 'crazy' movie that actually has something to say.
... View MoreThere's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.
... View MoreI have to admit when ATL first came out I didn't even bother to give it a chance. Roller skating? No thanks.Turns out I was dead wrong. It came on HBO a few summers back and I thought 'what the hell, why not?' and gave it a shot. What I got was an engaging, entertaining and plain fun coming of age movie with flecks of the south and an interesting perspective of black culture in terms of class. It's part John Hughes and part Spike Lee (minus the annoying sermonizing Lee often infuses in his movies). Sounds like a damn good combo to me.I think almost anyone who spent their late high school years bumming around with friends, talking trash, working on your swagger, hanging out and wondering what happens next can appreciate this. While I wouldn't take ATL too seriously, I would definitely watch it again. Especially on a hot day with a big ol' glass of iced tea.8/10
... View MoreDespite this movie not being one that you would take too seriously, i thought the story about 4 friends moving on after high school and resolving issues at the local skate ring they always hung out at was a decent idea, and to an extent was pulled off here. T.I. has got a lot of work ahead of him to become a decent actor, however it was not a bad start, and i have defeintely seen worse from first-time actors, and the fact that he is a rapper, we have to give him some more leeway haha. This is not a movie to be taken very seriously, but for what it is, it does a decent job capturing Atlanta's hip hop scene and a lot of the drama that is involved with the kids out there. This movie is similar to the likes of In the mix in my opinion, and is average. IMDb Rating: 4.5 My Rating: 7/10
... View MoreFirst of all, let me just say that people in cities like Atlanta, Chicago and Detroit do actually skate; it's not just a plot prop.Sure, it's not the "classic" drug, sex and violence hood flick, but it is a very real story and well told at that. I understand that a lot of people expect that from a movie about black people who live in a city and aren't rich, but the fact is, that's not everybody's life. It's not even most peoples' lives. This a love story people. Subtle, but cuddly and honest. I, for one, enjoyed it. And I think that anyone who does not have to, or otherwise manages to, get over what they expect based on what they've seen can find the human tale underneath and enjoy it too.
... View MoreI caught this movie the other night and really enjoyed it. When I was watching "ATL", I had this feeling of deja vu. Although, "ATL" is an enjoyable movie to watch, it shares the same formula as the 1979 rollerskating movie titled "Roller Boogie". In both movies, there is the "poor little rich girl" who wants to fit in, so she hangs out at the local roller rink. On the other side, there is the blue collar guy that is trying to get ahead, and keep afloat in life. The only difference in both movies, is that "ATL" focuses more on the interpersonal relationships of the main character's friends and family. In "Roller Boogie", the focus is more on the teens trying to save the local roller rink from being torn down, and thus threatening the cancellation of the big roller boogie competition...only in the '70s! For "ATL", I thought that T.I. did a great job, along with the other characters, in portraying kids trying to figure out what their next step will be in life, after high school. The roller segments and music just added to the movie. It was more of a drama. Even though roller skating is featured, it doesn't come off trying to cash in on a fad. It's more of a drama, with a nice soundtrack and skating thrown in. If you are a fan of dramas that are not too heavy, this is a great choice.
