This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

This is a short film that can be seen on a DVD of award-winning shorts from around the world from the Film Movement Series. For several years now, Film Movement has been bringing out a yearly compilation of shorts in place of their usual monthly feature film release. This is from the January, 2008 collection. The film begins with a group of birds flying south to Dakar for the Winter. However, our main character is unable to fly well enough to get there, so he goes to a doctor. I liked that the doctor's office was run like a state run health office and I also liked that one of the many bird patients was a bear in disguise. The doctor approves the cost of air fare to Dakar and we see our intrepid bird on his way to his Winter paradise--except that the plane ends up going to Southern France by way of practically every conceivable stop and becomes a funny commentary on bureaucracy. This is a short cartoon from France. However, despite being a cartoon, it really isn't for little kids as there are some condom references that just wouldn't be appropriate for a younger audience. The story is very odd and the animation quality is rather low, but somehow despite all this, it's an engaging little film with a cute ending (which I won't reveal).
