... View MoreAfter Betaab, Sunny did some indifferent films till Ghayal and he was dubbed a non actor, In 1980s he never shouted in films and came across as very lazy however he gave some good performances and some good films like Arjun Arjun released in 1985 it was a film which shows how youngsters get into world of crime, It starts off well, the scenes where Sunny beats up Goga Kapoor is well handled, slowly the way SUnny falls in trouble is well handled The scene where SUnny and his gang wait for the goons and whistle is superb The film does have 80s clichés, but yet it is a well made filmDirection by Rahul Rawail is good Music by RD Burman was good, Kero Mama is a superb song rest are okaySunny Deol tries hard and does a good job in his role though a bit raw those days Dimple Kapadia(one of her films post her comeback) is good in her role Paresh Rawal in his debut is good,Anupam Kher though hardly 31 in the film plays his part well, Goga Kapoor, AK Hangal.etc all are good

... View MoreSunny Deol debuted from the blockbuster Betaab, success eluded him until 1985 blockbuster Arjun. Arjun is the story of a middle classed family who are living their life. Arjun being the stepson has to tolerate the mom taunting him. But, Arjun(Sunny Deol)is used to this daily routine and he has decided to live life like this. But, he is tired of witnessing daily injustice done to the poor and his frustration increases after not getting a job and this injustice. Putting aside the consequences, Arjun grabs them and the action sequence starts. But, Arjun's friends stop him in time and the fight doesn't get much far. The guys Arjun beat up where part of Ranga's(Goga Kapoor) gang. Ranga goes to Arjun's home and warns them to take care of their son or he will do something bad. While this is happening Arjun's friends are happy running free through the streets after fighting of Ranga's men again. Arjun gets a firing from his dad and he doesn't keep quiet. He goes to Ranga's den and with the help of his friends beats up Ranga and cripples him. But, they escape before the police arrive. Ranga then meets his boss Anu(Paresh Raval in his debut film) and they plan attacks on Arjun's friends. Arjun's friends die and Arjun finds and kill the crooks in broad daylight. Arjun is arrested and held in a cell, his father bails him out. His parents throw him out of the house for so much trouble and he has nowhere to go. Arjun after little hesitation joins Shiv Kumar Chowgule and the movie moves on Arjun fighting against Trivedi another corrupt politician and the movies continues with Arjun solving all the problems he had and hurting Trivedi by disrupting his business. But, as he gets the files and gives them to Chowgule, he finds out that Chowgule is evil and when he tries to unmask Chowgule, Arjun gets beaten up by Chowgule's guards. Arjun in the climax goes to Chowgule and Trivedi, beats them up and takes the files and after getting hurt a lot manages to reach to the police. The police arrest the corrupt politicians and the story comes to an end as Arjun is awake after his wounds are fine in the hospital. The movie is really well made and my way of telling it is bad so please don't dislike it based on my synopsis. Overall, I give the movie an 10/10
... View MoreArjun (played by Sunny Deol) is a hard hitting movie about how a jobless youth (who fights against oppression by hoodlums) is exploited by the politicians to achieve their own mean and throw him like a waste and, how Arjun realizes it and brings them to justice.Rahul Rawail's no nonsense and crisp direction; well written screenplay and dialogues of Javed Akhtar and, first rate acting of Sunny Deol, Anupam Kher and Prem Chopra leaves a lasting impression and, makes the movie watchable more than once.In a way, Arjun is Sunny Deol's first movie as full fledged action hero and, it is also one of his best films. Though the character Arjun does not have many emotions and expressions to display, but still the level of Sunny Deol's acting is on par with or even above his later movies Ghayal and Damini (for which he has received Filmfare awards). Dimple Kapadia as love interest of Sunny Deol does not has much to do.A. K. Hangal, Shashikala and Supriya Pathak, as father, stepmother and sister of Arjun, respectively have done a good job, especially, Shashikala with mouthful of venomous words makes sure you hate her. Raj Kiran's acting as upright police officer is OK.Apart from Arjun, the other two main characters of the movie are the corrupted rival politicians Trivedi (played by Prem Chopra) and Chowgule (played by Anupam Kher) of the same party. Both Prem Chopra's and Anupam Kher's acting performance is highly commendable. Especially, Anupam Kher playing the role of Chowgule, a shrewd politician hiding himself as idealogical social worker steals the show. For instance, watch the change in his expressions when Arjun gives him the document that can be used as an evidence against Trivedi. Other noticeable performances are given by Raja Bundela (jobless youth and friend of Arjun), Annu Kapoor (secreatary of Chowgule) and Paresh Rawal (as henchman of Trivedi).R. D. Burman's music is not up to the mark. Out of the four songs "Duniya Maane Bura to" and "Bhuri Bhuri Aankhon" are the most noticeable ones. The background music barely leaves any impression, at places one gets traces of the background music of Sholay (For instance, when Arjun and his friends beat the hoodlums for the first time).Javed Akthar's dialogue and screenplay is good, audible and provides humour (at right places), but it is not up to the level of his previous work (Sholay, Deewar etc).Arjun is the best directorial work of Rahul Rawail until now. His crisp direction keeps the audience attention throughout the movie and succeeds in delivering the "real" intended message of the movie. One of the memorable piece of direction is Chowgule and Trivedi bargaining at an elliptical shaped table. Watch them arguing while walking from one edge of the table to the center of the table and then reconciling as they walk to the other end of table.Overall, Arjun is a "must" watch movie of Hindi cinema. It is much better than loads of movies that bollywood churns out about corrupt politician and underworld.PS: Arjun was remade as "Satya" in Tamil language where the character of Arjun was played by Kamal Hasan. Given a choice between Hindi and Tamil version, I would strongly recommend the Hindi version.
