Courtesan Madame Subbalaxmi heads a household where men are not born, but are welcome. Women are not welcome, but their birth is. Subbalaxmi is thrilled when her pet protege, Sangeeta, gives birth to a baby-girl, who they name Chandra. Shortly thereafter they relocate to a small community. Sangeeta wants Chandra to study, and she is allowed to do so. Chandra meets her neighbor, Kunal, and their family, and is welcomed by them. Problems arise, when Kunal and Chandra fall in love, as neither Kunal's family, nor Chandra's courtesan family will permit this marriage. Only time will tell if Chandra's fate is to be the same as other courtesans.

Pretty good movie overall. First half was nothing special but it got better as it went along.

This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.

All of these films share one commonality, that being a kind of emotional center that humanizes a cast of monsters.

There are moments that feel comical, some horrific, and some downright inspiring but the tonal shifts hardly matter as the end results come to a film that's perfect for this time.

It is not the case that we don't get love, but we don't get it from somewhere we expect. These lines belong to one of the songs of this movie and these lines are enough to tell the whole concept of this movie. It is a story of the daughter of a prostitute, who is in love with a boy. The boy belongs to a higher background. This love story goes well until the father of this girl appears. He wants the boy to get married to his legal daughter and makes this request to the girl. The girl finally sacrifices her love for the boy and the boy gets married to the half sister of this girl. Nice story and great presentation of emotions. Padmini Kolhapuri has acted nicely as the girl. You can keep on listening the music for hours. Alteast watch once.
