Four lost souls—a disgraced TV presenter, a foul-mouthed teen, an isolated single mother, and a solipsistic muso—decide to end their lives on the same night, New Year's Eve. When this disillusioned quartet of strangers meet unintentionally at the same suicide hotspot, a London high-rise with the well-earned nickname Topper's Tower, they mutually agree to call off their plans for six weeks, forming an unconventional, dysfunctional family. Martin (Pierce Brosnan) was a successful television morning show host UNTIL he slept, inadvertently he claims, with an underage lass. Now, he's jobless, wifeless, kidsless and desperate. So, he climbs a well known London building on New Year's Eve to jump off. But, wait! Its a bit crowded up there! Also thinking of jumping is Maureen (Toni Collette) a single mother with a disabled son, Jess (Imogen Poot) a politician's daughter whose sister has gone missing, and J.J. (Aaron Paul) who says he has brain cancer. As they being chatting, they soon decide tonight is not the night. What they will do instead is make a "pact" to try to work out their problems until Valentine's Day. Then, if things are not better, its Geronimo. Jess seems the most troubled and is rushed to the hospital by the new "gang" as she has taken an overdose. Also, more secrets come tumbling out. Perhaps the only remedy needed is a friendship that binds them together? This lovely film, based on a book by Nick Hornsby, has humor, sorrow, sweetness, and insight in equal measures. The four principal characters are great and are supporting finely by Sam Neill, Rosamond Pike, and others. The London setting is interesting while a second setting in Tenerife is most lovely. Nice costumes are complimented by a great script and a surefooted direction. Are you "down" on life at this moment? Watch this heartwarming movie and then get up and make some new friends!

I have been a fan of Nick Hornby for nearly 2 decades. A Long Way Down is one of his best novels. This film is only about a quarter of the book. The performances were good but even these talented actors couldn't save this terrible script. I really was anticipating this film but was very disappointed.

A dark comedy movie from the Britain which was partially based on a novel of the same name. The second movie together for the rising stars Imogen Poots and Aaron Paul after 'Need for Speed'. The trailer was one of the reasons I watch this movie. It created an interest in me for some uniqueness in its theme. But in the end when I watched the movie now it did not last much longer.Usually movies will have best shots for last parts, but here it came very early. The opening scene was the movie's highlight, get off with the fun and then while advancement it slowly died. The concept was really a good one, the story created around it was not. I expected twists and turns in last parts that never came. So, in the end it became a simple and the usual entertaining movie. All the actors were good, but their characters were not convinced enough. The developments were to blame because all the four main characters were not exposed well on the screen about some of the mysteries of their earlier stages. I mean the story talks about each of them's difficulties they recently went through and 50% of them remained unexplained phenomena. Like, what was the Aaron Paul's real problems and about Imogen Poots little sister etc.Beside all these flaws, there's little enjoyments. Toni Collette and Pierce Brosnan's roles were made sense and blended well with the concept. But when it comes to performances all the four were equally good. Overall, a fine subject was wasted for not that good story. Yes, a little let down movie, should have been a better. I don't know the book, maybe they should have adapted it straight without changing much. A decent movie to watch and no guarantee of satisfactory because differ from people to people.6.5/10

A Long Way Down is a black comedy drama about suicide. It is an adaptation of a novel by Nick Hornby. Pierce Brosnan plays a disgraced television personality who plans to end it all from a popular London suicide spot on New Year's Eve only to find out there are others planning the same thing.Imogen Poots is a young lady who feels ignored by her politician father (Sam Neill). Toni Collette is a mother with her hands full with a severe disabled adult son. Aaron Paul is an American musician with a terminal disease. The four decide to make a pact that they would not do anything drastic until Valentine's day and in that time bond, be there for each other, become notorious celebrities in the media and decide to get away from it all on holiday abroad where certain truths emerge which causes disruption.A film about suicide has to be sensitive and the characters are certainly warm led by Brosnan who puts in along with Collette a strong performance. Paul and Poots who also appeared in Need for Speed provide able support and there is a nice turn from Sam Neill who at one time was touted for the role of James Bond along with Brosnan. However its not the strongest of story, not actually that black or humorous but its the performances of the leads that carry the film and makes it enjoyable.
