I know about Theremin, Moog, Throbbing Gristle, Tangerine Dream and others. The name Suzanne Ciani is not one that I was familiar with. Having now seen this, and seen how important she was to video games, commercials, and music, I have to wonder how she is not a larger figure in modern history. There is one thing I would like to make clear. Ciani may be hailed as a "female" pioneer. For example, there is part of the film where she receives an award for women who have achieved great things. But while this may be true, I think it sells her short. She is a pioneer, period. Not simply among women, but among any group of electronic musicians. Her influence is wider than many others who may be better known. The film screened at the Boston Underground Film Festival (BUFF) on March 26 and I expect it will be picked up for distribution, possibly by Netflix. This is definitely a must-see for anyone who loves the history of music, electronics, or both.
