Like the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.

A lot of fun is to be had with '21 and Over' if you know what you're getting into. Sure, you'll hear from many people that it mimics 'The Hangover', possibly to a tee, but in my opinion, I think this entertaining and hilarious movie stand on its own. 'The Hangover' scribes Scott Moore and Jon Lucas get behind the director's chair together for their first time with this comedy and they prove they have as much skill as Todd Phillips when telling a college tale about drinking and debauchery. We first me Miller (Miles Teller), who is a fast talking wise-ass who is on his way to one of his high-school best friend's college campus, in order to celebrate his friend's 21st birthday. He is joined by his other best friend Casey (Skylar Astin), who is on a path to be a successful square on Wall-Street. The birthday boy in question is Jeff Chang (Justin Chon), who on the exterior seems like a very bright, enthusiastic, and responsible student. However, he lives with a constant stress of his demanding father (Francois Chau) puts on him, but making him study 24 hours a day in order to become a doctor, and in fact has not had a quality social life in college, in order to please his father.Chang tells his friends that he has the interview of his life the next morning and that he cannot celebrate turning 21 with his friends who have traveled to see him, however with a little arm pulling and an air horn, the epic and disastrous night begins. It starts out normal enough, as they're all out at the local bar doing shot after shot, when a rogue dart pierces an angry guy in the face. The trio leave as Chang is getting more hammered until the point where he cannot walk on his own and basically becomes unconscious for the remainder of the film with brief flashes of his coming to and drinking more. The mission is to get Jeff Chang home before his father picks him up first thing in the morning for his interview. Only thing is, Miller and Casey don't remember where Chang lives. From breaking in to sorority houses to a stampeding buffalo, to a multi level drinking contest, the three guys are constantly getting into trouble and avoiding death. And if you've seen 'The Hangover' or 'Old School', you can figure out how the rest of the plot goes.I think this particular raunchy comedy stands with the best of them, because of it's three main leads. They are all likable in some way or another and in the end, it's about true friendship, and what friends would do for another friend. Chon really stands out when he is coherent, as I'd love to see him do more comedy. He was so funny playing that one friend who has had too much to drink. His physical comedy was amazing.'21 and Over' is silly and stupid, but tons of fun and is chock full of laughs, nudity, alcohol and a lot of heart, even with its cliché scenes. I'm sure this won't get as much attention as the films I mentioned above, mostly due to the lack of big name actors, but I'd like to think that this is the younger brother of those iconic movies, who is going to grow into something bigger with a set-up sequel.

21 and Over (2013): Dir: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore / Cast: Miles Teller, Skylar Astin, Justin Chon, Sarah Wright, Francois Chau: Teen comedy about that entry in life where the forbidden seems accessible without consequence. It doesn't match The Hangover in clever storytelling nor Superbad in characters many can relate to. It does present the idea of friends, with all their good intentions, get us into tremendous trouble. It stars Miles Teller and Skylar Astin as a couple friends who desire to take their Asian friend, played by Justin Chon out for his 21st birthday but Chon is under pressure due to his strict father and a job interview the next morning that his father arranged. Structure is basically a series of events where Teller and Astin struggle to find Chon's dorm. Chon is drunk to the point of having to be carried about. The rest of the evening consists of being pursued by Latino women after a dorm spanking incident. A group of jocks desire to beat the crap out of them after a bad dart incident. We have a stampeding Bison at a bomb fire that should never be attempted at home. The ending is problematic in its dealing with Chon's father. Acting is fine with Teller as the immature one who dropped out of college, and Astin as the guy trying to make something of himself but hauled in by Teller's influence. Chon is hilarious in a role where he is barely conscious. Sarah Wright as potential Astin love interest Nicole has the personality of a beer mug. Francois Chau as Chon's overbearing father is a total waste and unfortunately the bunt of applauded disobedience. Some viewers may relate while others may mature to The Hangover. Score: 6 ½ / 10

"21 & Over" is your fairly average teenage comedy of young guys ending up in awkward and hilarious situations. And the movie does follow the blueprint for those particular types of movies page by page, line by line. The movie doesn't really bring anything new to the genre that hasn't already been seen or done in other movies in the same particular genre of comedies. The story is about the friends Miller (played by Miles Teller) and Casey (played by Skylar Astin) who go unannounced to pay their friend Jeff Chang (played by Justin Chon) a surprise visit for his 21st birthday. Jeff has a huge interview set up by his father the next day, and he is forced out for a night on the town by his friends. Once the alcohol starts flowing, inhibitions are lowers and the party kicks up into gear."21 & Over" is entertaining enough for what it is, just bear in mind that it is far from innovative or groundbreaking. There are some nice enough scenes and situations throughout the movie, however you are not very likely to lay down flat on your back laughing hard. What makes the movie worth watching a single time is the chemistry between the three lead actors (and their characters) and some of the situations that they end up in."21 & Over" gets a mediocre 5 out of 10 stars from me.

Miller (Miles Teller) and Casey (Skylar Astin) are old high school friends to JeffChang (Justin Chon). They haven't seen him for awhile, and they plan to party for his 21st birthday. Miller is a crass idiot. Casey wants to be reserved and is infatuated with beautiful Nicole (Sarah Wright). JeffChang gets pass out drunk, and the guys have to figure out where he lives. The three guys are lesser versions of better actors elsewhere. The story is a lesser version of other drunken party animal movies. Even the guys make-out scene is a lesser version of 'American Pie 2'. In this movie, it doesn't get a laugh. A lot of this movie don't get a laugh. I do like the guys, but the movie needs better everything. Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are first time directors, and it shows.
