I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

When I saw Bruce Willis in the credits I thought this would be a great movie. He might be more involved but he wasn't. Only his name was there, not him. Big disappointment. Movie was good, a lot of OMG does this really happen? I suppose I expected more with Bruce Willis' name but he didn't deliver. Good movie, scary thoughts as to does this actually happen and if it does, people need to be a lot more careful and the people that are supposed to protect us, get with it people! This is beyond scary.

I saw this move for the second time yesterday. If you are looking for the traditional "Die Hard" Bruce Willis, you will be a bit disappointed. There is a fair amount of action which is typical for a Bruce Willis crime film, but his character in this film is much more cerebral, lacking the usual type A personality. His character is quite depressing but by the end you will realize the cause of this mentality. His co-star initially was annoying but he grew on me as the movie progressed to the point that, mixed in that peculiar voice of his, he has a very strong message on morality and regret. The plot can seem unbelievable at times due to geographical small area in which the entire story occurs and the time elapse especially toward the end but not to the point that it brings the move down. The plot flowed at a constant pace and kept me interested. There was an alternate ending available on the DVD which some viewers may find more appealing as it is quite the opposite of the released ending. The director did a really good job of filming angles and working within the crowds of New York City. If you want to see an atypical Bruce Willis action movie with an interesting co-star this could be one for you. Not one I would recommend to watch with a significant other on a date night and I would not begin to compare this to the popular Die Hard franchise but on its own merits it is well worth the watch

"Detective Jack Mosley" (Bruce Willis) is a burnt-out New York City cop who is given the simple assignment of picking up a witness in custody named "Eddie Bunker" (Yasiin Bey) and taking him to the courthouse which is just 16 blocks away. What neither of them realize is that the person Eddie is going to testify against is a high-ranking member within the police force who has no intention of allowing him to appear in court alive. Neither does Eddie realize how many other people might be affected by his testimony. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this scenario has been used several times in the past with varying degrees of success. Unfortunately, although this particular picture certainly had its fair share of action, the overall plot became more unrealistic the further the story developed which greatly affected the film as a whole. To be sure, Bruce Willis turned in a fine performance and some of the action was quite intense, but the movie itself lacked the realism necessary for me to rate it any higher than I have. Slightly below average.

I thought 16 Blocks was going to be one of those movies that would be a prime example of a Die Hard ripoff. But actually if you can get through the first ten minutes, the movie is a different kind of movie than Die Hard. The movie tackle themes such as police corruption, which is big these days apparently. The movie itself features plenty of action and shoot-em-up scenes and there are quite a few showdowns between Bruce Willis's character and the NYPD, which make things quite interesting.Richard Donner's film is about a washed-up, alcoholic NYPD detective named Jack Moseley who is given a simple task of escorting a witness sixteen blocks to a courthouse where a trial is taking place. But those sixteen blocks are the hardest blocks to walk because Jack has ex-partners who want the witness, a fast-taking dude named Eddie Bunker dead.Bruce Willis does a great job as the washed-up cop. Then again, he should because he played John McClane five times in the Die Hard installments. As for Mos Def, it might take some time to warm up to his character. He has such a grating voice, but his personality is quite sweet and I felt the bakery subplot to be touching. David Morse plays a good role as the corrupt cop always on Jack's tail.Overall, 16 Blocks is a highly entertaining action movie if one can forgive the action movie clichés and the annoying voice of Mos Def. The film breezes by in its rapid storytelling and there are a few moments of humor to be had. The film is expertly directed by Donner, who knows a thing or two about action movies. This film is not the Die Hard ripoff I was expecting. I rate this film 8/10.
