After playing with our expectations, this turns out to be a very different sort of film.

There's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.

Let me start by saying this is not a review, per se. I was going to write one, but was very happy to see that I didn't have to. Every one of the 20 or so reviews I read hit the nail on the head, and those nails hopefully are on the coffin of this movie. This movie was bad, left no stones unturned in its pursuit of badness, and never for more than two minutes let us forget that it was bad. That's about how often an overwhelming discontinuity, or trite piece of mockudrama, reared its head. There is nothing good to be said about this movie, because it is a Bad Movie. Now here's what I want to do. I want a Call to Action. I believe that all or most of the actors, directors, producers, writers of this movie are still alive and well. I want to call a town hall meeting where they are all called to account for this film. Sort of like a Congressional hearing, the likes of which we've been seeing lately with the bankers or the carmakers. This movie had a budget of $22 million. That's not super big budget, but it's not chump change. In some way, that's our money. That's the money we've spent on all previous films. It's money we've invested in these companies, with the thought that they will produce good movies. This, as I said, is not a good movie. We should demand action, demand that the wrongdoers be identified, and demand that those responsible are punished. There is no excuse for a film like this. Someone was sold a bill of goods, and every step along the way there were "yes men" agreeing to go ahead with it, when there had to have been over 10,000 opportunities for someone to say, "no, this can't go on." And yet no one did it; no one pulled the plug. No one stopped this disaster from occurring. I think we have the right to know what they were thinking. Anyone who wants to join me in demanding that the participants in this movie come forward, please let me know! Time is of the essence! Another disaster could be on its way!

First of all this TV movie is not that believable. There are things in this that will not happen but you must understand this is made for entertainment purposes only. This is fiction and not a documentary. So it doesn't have to be believable or it's science does not have to be correct. This has pretty good special effects for a made for TV Movie/Mini Series and not too bad acting though it maybe cheesy at times. It has some good actors in it like Fred Ward (Tremors & Tremors 2), Beau Bridges (Stargate SG-1), Jonathan Schneider (The Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville) etc. which is always a plus. So overall this movie is not too bad.

The idea of it all was great and with a massive earthquake dividing America in half it draws you to see the movie. But once you get into the movie it starts getting cheesy. They discover an never before seen major fault line running through North America 700 km below the surface. Now as everybody knows 700 km into the surface THERE Isn't ANY SURFACE, its all just a pile of molten rock cause of the heat, it couldn't ever get any pressure to build up under the tectonic plates. Its just impossible. And the worst setback is the zooming in, zooming out part of the camera's. One second ur looking at a high image of a disaster scene, the next you see feet trampling around and pieces flying around their ears but always able to dodge every piece of it. If i can give you one piece of advice, if this is EVER on TV again, just SWITCH THE CHANNEL! It'll put you asleep when you watch it.

Recap: Suddenly disaster strikes Seattle. A huge earthquake devastates the entire city. Soon thereafter an even bigger earthquake strikes northern California (chasing and devouring a train for instance). The president assembles a team of the top experts in the field to find out what is going on. Dr Samantha Hill is on that team and has a theory. She believes a deep (really deep - I think she stated 700 km deep which is astounding considering that the Earths crust is at most 100 km thick (I'm not sure about the last figure, but 100 km is larger than all I could find)) hidden fault is responsible and that the earthquakes are separate but connected. And that is not enough. She predicts that next quake will strike San Francisco. But she has problems convincing anyone that her theory is correct. Until she is proved right that is.Comments: This is one of the biggest clichés ever. I doubt that the writers had any ideas of their own at all. Each and every step of the plot is predictable and typical of this kind of movie (and often stolen from another movie, for example Armageddon). All characters have troubles in their relationships at the beginning, but of course all reconcile (quickly and easily) during the movie. Each and every character is also deeply stereotypical. Thin like paper and not developing anything. Motives are blunt and typical clichés.I still wonder why in way too many bad movies the final solution is nukes. Here the nature is behaving badly, and of course the solution is to bomb it back in line. I'm not kidding. They are actually going to detonate nuclear warheads to force nature back in line, and to stop more earthquakes.I am also amazed that this production got nominated to an Emmy for best special effects. My friend and me frequently commented how horrible they looked. It is never any doubt that models and toys were used for most of the action-shots. Especially when the quake are chasing the train (Yes, it actually is. I kid you not) it is so bluntly clear we are watching a toy train-set in a set it is funny. The same goes for many cars and trucks and whenever water floods anywhere. The plot outline speaks of tsunamis too, but I never saw one though. In spite of all this, and in spite that it is really long (165 min) it never becomes too dull. Sure, you know how it will end right after the introductions are made and every event is predictable and typical of the movie, but something happens all the time. And you can sit there and be amazed how stupid they are all the time. But I never got really bored, I got to give it that at least. Finally I can't believe that it got a sequel...4/10
